155 grains 308 Bullets

I wonder if Hornady A-max and Nosler 155 grains bullets
are suitable for long range shooting (1000 yards).
sincerely
Filippo

Yes, both will work just fine. Some of the newer design bullets like the Berger 155.5gn Fullbore or the Sierra 155gn 'Palma' 2156 will be a little more aerodynamic and have a slightly higher BC... but the 'older' designs like the older Sierra 2155, the Nosler (a blatant copy), and the Hornady got there just fine. The caveat being, with shorter/ factory barrels you may or may not be able to push them fast enough (2850 minimum) to be a good choice - you may find a mid-weight bullet like a 175-185gn might be a better choice for your particular gun.

Fillipo.......you are asking from Italy so I am assuming you are into International F Class with a 1/2 minute V-ring.

The 155 AMAx and Nosler are OK for practise but for competition go to the 2156 Sierra, Scenar or Berger. The Ontario Palma team ordered a skid of Bergers last Winter.

At the last minute my main 6AI barrel for F(O) gave up the ghost this past July and I went into the 2010 Provincials and Canadian Nationals with my backup Savage VLP .308, 26 inch barrel, shooting F/TR. Needed a total of 600 rounds for both competitions. Threw together a bunch of Sierra (2155), Nosler and Scenar 155s, all in Winchester brass loaded over Reloder 15, chronod at 2850 fps. Was too late for the Berger order so didn`t have any. Didn`t have any Varget, a better powder for .308 in the Summer heat.

Couldn`t compete with the custom 30 inch barrels generating 2950 fps but got a first hand demonstration of the ability of the three bullets at long range. The Scenars gave me consistently higher scores than the other two.

The Savage VLP is a very nice one minute rifle but if you want to be competitive on a 1/2 minute V-Bull, you will need a custom 30 inch rifle with the best 155s available if you want to stick with that bullet weight.

Sirs
Big +1 on the Lapua 155 Scenars. Have shot the Sierra both old and new and the Scenars at 600 to 1000 and I get consistently better groupings with the Lapua out of a 29 inch 1:13 Hart barrel. Can not say enough good things about them.

It seems that F class shooting will debut in Italy in 2011.Plan to shoot my son TRG 22 that for some reason does not like Scenar 155 grs.It does shoot well all the others except the Berger 155.5
which I could not find locally.Best group at 100 metres was .260
with Sierra 2156.So far I did all the loading and he does the shooting.I will see how it behaves at the longer ranges, the 155 A Max have been very consistent.I will try heavier bullets with slower burning powders.
Thank you
Filippo

Fillipo..............the trend in .308 F/TR has been to heavier bullets where allowed. There still is some settling out around the world as to allowed bullet weights in F/TR. If your local rules allow heavier bullets try 180 and 185s.

An F Class buddy of mine did very well in F/TR at the 2010 Canadian Nationals with heavy Bergers.
