155 AMAX in a 308

A friend of mine just gave me a box of 155 AMAXs. I have a 12 twist 308 to shoot them but first wanted to know if anyone else is having any luck with them. I don't see them talked about much on the forum so I don't know that I want to use up powder and primers if it won't be worth it.

It depends on what you want to do with them. If your shooting F class or something, you might be disappointed. They are not Bergers or Lapuas, but I have had good luck shooting Hornady HPBT in my Savage F class rifle and have been able to get 1/2 to 3/4 MOA out of them. The Amax is similar, they make good practice bullets or if your not trying to win a match they are fine. They are not consistent enough to compete out to 600 or 1000 yards.

Thanks Rocknut. The only match I'm competing in is a local 300 yard match. I was hoping someone would have some results worth bragging about as they are much cheaper than the Sierras, Lapuas, and Bergers.

WORK UP TO THIS SLOWLY (Disclaimer).....I've been using Lap (LRP). Brass, 45.8 grs. of xbr 8208 and Tula LR .020 off in a .340 Nk. 20 shots with an ES of 4fps 2841-2845 fps. it's 1/2 moa or slightly better in a setback factory Rem barrel. I've seen NO HIGH pressure with this load combo. Berger 155.5 fullbore will do better (group wise) w/.8grs more with ES's @ 11 fps

I've never used them but a buddy of mine swears by him. I suppose I can see why when he's getting consistent 3 shot groups around 1" at 400 yards.

I've had good luck with 155 Amax, using Varget, Lapua brass, CCI BR primers It is pretty consistent 1/2 minute of angle out to 400 yards in a Rem 40XB with 27" barrel.

If I were to sort the bullets, in what increments would I group them? .003" spread be ok or should it be even less?

Also, I'm almost out of Varget, I have plenty of IMR 4064 and IMR 4895. Any preference to either of these?

Thanks for the input!

with 155's I had much better groups with 4064 than with 4895. velocity is probably less but accuracy was better.

Of course .001" would be great but sort them to see what kinda groups you get and then let you conscience be your guide. As for the powders your barrel will tell you what it likes. Same can be said for your length lots. ;D

The bullet I use whenever I chamber a 308. 155 bucket at 2.79" and 46 he varget. Not a rach driver in every rifle but always at least moa an greT to zero/break in a barrel
