14tw Will Not Stabilize 69gr Bergers

I did some playing around yesterday and decided to load some 69gr Berger’s I had as my foulers. I was shooting a 6ppc with a 14tw Hart Barrel and 66gr bullets with 28.5gr of n133. I backed the load back to 28gr for the 69 Berger’s. This is the second time I tried using the 69gr. Berger’s.

Long story short, the barrel will not stabilize 69gr Berger’s. The bullet tumbled. Labradar would not even pick them up. I have seen where some are shooting 66-69gr bullets in their ppc. Is this gun, bullet and barrel specific. Or will a 14tw not stabilize any 69gr bullet?

I have some 68gr Bart’s that I will try to see if I get the same results.

Best to categorize not by weight, but by length when it comes to stability.
Berger recommends a 12 twist for this bullet.
Not all barrels are twisted as advertised.

That's a really light load of 133 for a custom action you dont say what your rifle is

Farley action. I got the same result with 28.5gr. No pressure signs but that actually exceeds quickloads safe pressure.

Length ranges from .929-.936.

About .860" or so is maxing out a 14twist from my experience

On another note
29.8 and even up over 30 grains of some lots of 133 are common loads.
Looking for 3350 to 3380 or so hits a good velocity node

I have worked up to 3000, using 29.2-29.5grs and am getring what I consider to be decent results.

Much more powder than that and I will have to invest in a drop tube.

Bart ultra 68gr. Also have some 65gr boattails.

I am just starting reloading and this is my first Ppc. Actually first two. Both are Farley actions.

66gr Cheeks. I am going slow, just trying to get a feel for the gun and reloading while working up a load. There is a lots to learn.

The picture shows how the cheeks shot in the first gun, as far as I have gotten. I think they are going to shoot good jammed hard or jumped around .005.

While I have shot the second gun quite a bit, I have not started to work up a load for it yet. It is shooting better than the first gun with 28.5 n133, jumped .15.

I have no clue as to how many shots have been fired on either gun.

At 100 yards, it seems as if the load is close to tuned, it is relatively easy to shoot in the low twos or better if you do your part.

Ok. Just out of curiosity, I loaded some of the 68gr Bart Ultras and 29gr of N133. I needed to fireform 5 more pieces of the Norma Brass that I had just neck turned to bump the shoulder out approximately .007!and figured this would be a good time to play.

I used 4 pieces of Sako 220 Russian to foul the barrel. Yea, there is a story behind the 220 Russian brass. Anyway, I loaded all nine cases and shot them today after lunch. After the barrel settled down, I shot the last 4 at the target. Shot around .140. Es for the last four shots was 6.

Sometimes I’d rather be lucky than good. I hope the Bart’s probe out when I start working up a load for them. No doubt, the gun will stabilize them.

Btw, Tim, this lot of Bart’s oal measures around.833. You are spot on.

You need to own a real nice drop tube if you own a ppc. Slow pour and get it on up there. Dont even use quickload on a ppc- they would look like fred sanford going to join elizabeth if they seen how we shoot em. The 28.5 node works real good until the first puff of wind comes up

If im using my harrels thrower i have a 14” tube for it. Mostvtimes im using a chargemaster and have that blue forster blue ribbon funnel. Slow pour you can get 30 below the neck easily

Buy one from Steve @ Benchrite. Long drop tube with funnel attached. Designed to sit on the case without having to hold it. Good product.
