140gr. SST Hornady in 6.5x284

I've been shooting my 6.5x284s forever at long range prone. I had one made up for hunting hunting. Twist is the same as my prones, 1:8. Sighting it in I used my 142MK Sierras over IMR 4350. It loved them. One tiny bug hole. I switched to the Hornady 140gr. SSTs. I measured the shank on the bullets and it is longer than the Sierra by a .1, so I stated low on my charges. I started with 48gr. of 4350 (with Sierra 142s I use 49.5gr. of 4350 yielding 2960fps). I tried several different charges, and couldn't get a group under 2". Granted it was very windy, but was only shooting 100 yards.

Anyone have any loads with a different powder that worked for them with these bullets?

I'm using:
Winchester 284 necked down to 6.5
Hornady 140gr. SST
Federal GM210 primer

Same bullet and rate of twist, different cartridge, same result. I can't get them to shoot well between 2700 and 2800 fps. I gave up.

I was afraid of that. I have a bunch of these bullets now....

I have no idea why BUT some barrels just don't like certain bullets for whatever reason. I have had 3 / 6.5 x 47 Lapua's.. The first one LOVED everything that went down the bore and LOVED H4350. The other 2 did not care for H4350 and only likes 123-130class bullets. ALL 3 from the same reamer and rifle>>all 1-8 twist. WHY the variance>> I don't know and I doubt anyone could tell you.. It may be that your rifle simply does not like those bullets. My friend uses them in a 7mm-08 and it eats them up like candy!

I tried the 6.5mm 140gr. SST based on my guns performance with 140 gr. Amaxs. They were in short supply at the time as were the HPBT 140 gr. Hornady.

8 twist Broughton 26" on Rem 700 long action. 52.5 H4831sc grns. seated into the lands at 2900 shoots 3/4 to 1 inch at 200. It will also shoot under 6 at 600. I haven't shot any further with this rifle. Forgot to mention this is also a 5c barrel.

Works for me. Try H4831sc before you dump the bullets. Like others have said not all barrels like the same bullet, primers, or powder. Also I shoot Fed.210 std primers, but do shoot 52.8 with BR2 in my 6.5-284 1k rifle.

You know the drill start with lower charges and work up.

Thanks. I bought some H4831SC today. I'll give it a try and post the results when this cold snap breaks.

Well, after much research with the 140SSTs, 4831SC shoots very well with 51.7gr. @2960fps. But RL22 with 50.8gr. is a little tighter. All shots touching @2960fps. That's the node this barrel really likes. BUT..... with 53.2gr. I found another one at 3100fps!!! But with very sticky bolt lift and primer cratering. Too hot.

Shoot .4's at 2840 with that bullet with 47.6 gr. of Rel. 22. in my 26" bbl Krieger 1-8 twist 260 AI.

Have made three deer kills over 500 yards the past two years with it. The bullet works and works well in my combination.
