140 Berger Hybrid

I tried these the other day and I was a bit surprised. I used my same exact load for 142 Smk and got a tighter group. Rifle is a 6.5x284. At 200 yds group was less than 3/4" with 142's but I have a clover leaf with the hybrids. Anyone using these? I don't see much written about them.

Lots of people use them. This is my tactical rifle match bullet. I tip them as well. A lot of the 6.5/260 guys use them in tactical matches. Lots of people in the f-class range have gone to the higher BC and wind bucking 7mm and 30cal cartridges which is probably why you dont see much being said or talked about in this forum.

But I can tell you a lot of tactical guys will use this if they're running the 6.5 creedmoor, 6.5x47 lapua, or 260 remington.

I use it in my 6.5 creedmoor with H4350. Shoots 5 shot 3/8" groups at 100 yards all day out of my tactical rifle. I jump them also FYI. I used my tac rifle in a 600 yard match and they performed very well. Nothing out of the 9 ring and thats with a harris bipod, homemade rear sandbag, rem varmint countour barrel and my poor wind reading skills ;)

Put it this way...this is probably the best option BC wise for the 6.5mm caliber bullets. Lots of guys use scenar's and A-Max's also, but I would bet that if cost was not an issue, the hybrid will be tops on most people's list.

I use them in a 260 and am very happy with them. Play with the seating depth in .003 increments and you should be able to improve on your results.

Good Shooting.

They shoot 1/4 moa in my 6.5x47 tactical rifle off the bipod and Im not the worlds best bipod shooter. I use the same combo in my fclass gun.

My 260 stacks them at 100 over H4350. They have been very easy to tune also. I starts at a .010" jump and it happened to be perfect. 2900fps keeps them legal for most steel matches too

FWIW, my BRX doesn't like Bergers. Load them up with SMK's and they will keyhole. I have several rifles that prefer smk's and I always try them. Other shooters tell me the same thing.

HOWEVER, I have several rifles that will only shoot Bergers! They will not shoot a smk.

My 308 loves 168 SMK's, and also loves 185 grain Bergers. Both are keyholers out of this rifle!

A keyhole is a very bad thing, it indicates that the twist is too slow so bullets will tumble. When we see keyholes on target, we pull the shooter off the line immediately for safety concerns.

Bugholes or cloverleafs would be a better term.

KEYHOLE was a bad choice of words, I was up late just reading.

How is the bottom right picture, it might explain better what I was referring to. All were 5 shot groups and probably only .2 grain powder difference. BRX shooting smk 107, it shoots 10 times better than I can shoot it.

I have tried to understand what the above post has to do with 140 Hybrids. One of life's mysteries I guess.

POINT: All barrels are different and prefer their own bullet/load. My 6.5x47L prefers smk's, and my 6.5x284 prefers smk's. Neither will shoot Bergers as well as smk's. Some of my other rifles will only shoot Bergers, don't try anything else.

I will probably round up all of my 140 Bergers and sell them. Point again: not all rifles are going to like bergers regardless of what caliber they are. It amazes me.

The orginal post starts with:

He starts the thread comparing SMK's vs. Bergers. His question really refers to all calibers using SMK's and Bergers. Some even mention using different powders.

He also states:
I don't see much written about them.
Maybe the above answers from everyone will help in someway.

Everyone has to learn at some point. I wish several years ago I had someone to help. In fact 82Body help me tremendously many years ago. I have never felt I have advanced to the point I don't have to help someone in need. I help the new people in the sport and still learn from the more experienced here. Sometimes you have to start at the basic's.
