14" twist ?

IMG_1739.JPG IMG_1739.JPG My Winchester 1885 is supposed to have a 14" twist. I loaded up some 55gr Nosler BT and behind max loads of Re#15 and W-W 760 and both loads were under 3/4 out in NV desert field conditions. Tried to mark my cleaning rod and hold a tape measure to measure and rifling unscrews the jag instead. Anyhow the 1885 is now a tack driver.

Ironworker -

Howdy !

Have you tried any FED LR Magnum Rifle Match primers w/ your 760 loads?

And perchance, have you also tried H414 ( re- canistered WW760 )?

Just wondering....

No haven't tried any FEDERAL mag primers. Well I know H414 is the same so I just buy ww-760. Monday I'll be getting a lb of AA 2700 .

Using a Bronze brush I measured it,its a 13" twist bbl. How did they get off 1" ? Not complaining .

It is pretty typical to see the advertised twist rate and the actual as measured twist not the exact same. Might also want to redo it with a tight fitting patch...bronze brush is not the optimal device for measuring twist rates in barrels. Be sure what ever you use is tight in the cleaning rod.

Edit: Also, you might want to check it just forward of the chamber and again up near the muzzle...some barrels are "gain" twist and not advertised or even necessarily intentional.

I'll try that . I might load a few 53gr Hornady V-Max,or some 60gr bullets ,if it stabilizes those ? I'll be a happy camper.

Iorn, 53 v max needs a 12 twist, been there, done that.

14T, 60g sierra will be very accurate, but shoots holes through coyotes and they run off. Best heavy bullet for the 14 twist is the 63g Sierra, very accurate, very deadly.

55g Hornady sp with the cannalure is a very accurate bullet if you need penetration for lions, so are most of the Sierra line.

Hope you can get the AA2700, use a Rem 9 1/2.

I used Rem 9 1/2's with 760 in my swift loads with 55g bullets, used 44.5g of AA2700 in rem brass 50g Nosler and Sierra, 220 swift, 4000 fps dead nuts with less than 10 fps ES....tiny, tiny groups

Yep, I just got done trying out some of those Hornady 55 grain soft points...very accurate. Another bullet that seems to shoot very good and they don't cost much, as bullets go, is the Nosler Varmageddon's.

Just bought some Rem 9 1/2 primers and a LB of AA 2700 will arrive Monday. Currently its about getting the Coyotes to cooperate

53-grain VMAX bullets don't do well in 1-14" barrels. Too long for that twist. Try 52-grain Amax (Now ELD-M) Hornadys. They are shorter and shoot tiny little groups (well under 1/2" on good days) out of my 1-14" 22-250 Ruger #1B when pushed around 3,850 fps or so.
