130gr 6.5mm Hornady Amax

I was complaining about the lack of 6.5mm, 130gr match projectiles today in a gun shop. I was told by a fellow customer that Hornady are developing a 130gr Amax for their Creedmoor cartridge.

Can anyone confirm that Hornady are developing this projectile? Hornady are readily available in Australia and this would be great news if correct. I haven't got a Creedmoor but they would be put to good use in my 6.5x47L.

I know they have the 120 AMAX but never heard of a 130 AMAX in the works. I'll have to check that out. Anyone else heard this?

I can only tell you that the last time I spoke w/Lonnie Hummel, about a month ago, I mentioned the same thing and he said they have no such plans currently.

I figured the best way to resolve this was to ask Hornady, so I shot them off an email this morning. I'm hoping the rumor mill is right on this one. As soon as I hear from them I'll post their answer.

Today I got a response from Hornady. I asked if they could confirm that a new 6.5mm, 130gr AMAX projectile was under development.

This is the one line response I got...

"At this time, the only 6.5 bullet that is new to us is the 120 gr."

Its the sort of answer that you would expect from a politician, it neither confirms or denies that they are developing a 130gr AMAX. What do you guys make of that reply?

I would be extremely surprised if they do come out with a 130 A-max.
What would the 130gr offer that would be better than either the 120 or 140? I don't think it is enough different than either to justify the extra inventory, but I could be wrong.
I tried to convince them that they need a 178 or 180gr .284 A-max and the guys I talked to didn't see the need. Of course the way the new lots 162 A-maxes are shooting they may be right. :)

Ask Berger Bullets how popular their 6.5mm, 130gr VLDs are and you will discover there is a huge market but Hornady, Sierra, etc dont seem interested in it at present.

There is what two options for the 130 right now Berger and Norma. I would like to see a 130 scenar and hell the other companies come up with one.

Of course I think Berger likes having this nitch as the Normas run inconstant from lot to lot.

Also the JLK 130 is available. It's a great shooting bullet...

I totally agree with your comments and would like to see a 130gr scenar, excellent projectiles)go into production. Hornady's Amax and Lapua's Scenar projectiles have great QA and are consistent batch to batch.

It should be easy for Lapua to make a 130 since the 123 and 139 are the same bullet aside from core weight.
