130gr 6.5mm berger vld on deer?

i have a 6.5x47 lapua pushing 130gr berger vld at around 2950fps and am wondering if they will expand well enough on fallow deer.? i think our fallow would be around the same size as your whitetail

yeah i know they do a " hunting" version but i already have a load and im sure someone has used the target version

IMHO, if you find the need to hunt anything larger than a coyote with a target bullet, do the animal and yourself a favor and use the hunting version. Yes, there are some who have been successful with the target version, but, you can also race a Mini Cooper on the track against the GT3 ;D

The straight target bullets are marginal on deer sized critters, and are not recommended, but the VLD's will flat out do the job on them...

just to clarify you are talking about the straight VLD doing a good job not just the dedicate VLD hunting?

i think the box actually has "suitable for hunting recommended for target shooting" unlike the hybrids that are target only.

they are not hard to kill I've shot them with 87v max out a .243 and 115 nosler BT from my .257WM

im more worried about the bullet penciling through than coming apart as the other bullets I've used wernt controlled expansion but did the job well.

The 130 gr. hunting vld is my favorite antelope bullet. It should do equally well on Fallow deer. The faster you push them the faster the animals hit the dirt. Stay off the shoulder blades , just to conserve the meat otherwise they are excellent. ;)

Try the 130 hunting VLD for target shooting! Ive worked up loads for these as its all I could get before the WA Queens. 37.5gr 2208 and CCI450's shoot FLAT! And 41gr 2209 shoots 1/2 min higher at 900m with pretty much the same waterline. On the weekend at 900m we had some horrid conditions with Fclass Std top score 107.4 then a FO shooter with a 6.5x284 came second with 109.2 then myself taking out the day with 116.9 using the 6.5x47L and the two loads above. Those hunting VLD's hammer!

Be more concerned about over-expansion.

For 40-100Kg deer my go-to bullet has been the 129/140 SST in the 6.5mm at 2825-2925fps. Terminal performance has been very reliable with golf ball size exits being the norm on rib cage shots from 20-275yds. All animals recovered very quickly. The bullets are easily obtainable and at a reasonable price point.
