123 smk at 1000

To get a good answer, I would like more information as to what you are asking for. Effective as in wind drift? Flat shooting? Accurate? Killing Power? Velocity? Ect Ect.
Question is a little vague.

A question for your Question just what you wanted right? Sorry, about that.

Like was stated above we need more info. I have shot the 123 Lapuas to 1300yds with my 260 on steel and targets. They shot better than the 140s did in my gun.

When I first shot the 140s to 1300yds I had problems with misses high, low, left, right. But when I shot the 123s my misses were from wind calls.

Shooting the 123s in my 260 reminded me of shooting my 6.5x284. I really do like them for the 260 sized case. I have always felt that the 140s were a little heavy for the 260 sized case. The 140s really shine in the 6.5x55 and the 6.5x284s.

I have a 23" barrel on my 260 after its last set back and it hammers the hell out of steel out to 1300yds. Last time I was out I dialed in my 1000yd target and hit it 3 out of 3 with a 10 to 12mph wind.

mostly for 600 and 1000 f class matches.. only experience i have at 1000 is with a 6.5x284 with 142 smk at 2900 fps.. have read the 142 is maybe hard to get 2900 fps with the 260 so was wondering about the 123 smk. hope this helps

You might want to check out the 130's by Berger. I good friend of mine is shooting them out of his 260AI. They shoot light out at 1000yards and in. Worth a look anyway.
Accuarcy is the most important aspect. Learning to shoot and read wind is just part of the game and takes time and effort. Or at least it did for me but Im not that smart so it took awhile. : )

thanks, the wind kicks my but. i have only shot two matches so far and hoping that this year i will learn more. just looking for a caliber to change my 308 to that is better in the wind than it is. thanks

Yep AEDEC has some good ole boys that shoot FTR real well. So the F O might be a good learning tool also.
Ill see you on the line come March. Thats a good range to learn on. not near as violent as Oak Ridge can be.
Try some diffrent bullets and pick the one that shoots the tightest groups and lowest SD ES and go have fun and learn.

OK Ive did some research on some Former National Champions 260 Rem (6.5-308) loads.
N150 or N140 powder seem to be a good combo with the 142 SMK at 600 and 1000 yards Those guys are getting 2700FPS or more from that bullet. That is very respectable numbers that will shine at 1000 yards. Run some ballistic programs compairing the 308 175gr at 2600 to 2700fps to the 142gr of the 6.5mm going the same speed. I think you would well advised to give it a try.
PMC Tula or CCI BR2 primer and a Lapua or Winchester case.

I know you didnt ask about the 142 SMK but all the big dogs point to this bullet as a proven performer. Folks that win National Championships tend to catch my attention.
