12 lb. rifle for long range steel shoot

Have any of you gents built a 12Lb rifle for 1000yd steel shoots?..I shoot a Savage weighted to 17 lbs now..I am wondering if this project using an old Savage short action is worth the bother..Mike N Ct

no replies..OK, maybe some of you have built a 223 to use for cheap practice??? out to say 850yds..I bought two new barrels for this season..a 6MMBRX & a 260Rem AI..I had planned to use the BRX for practice & compete w the 260..The BRX shoots so nice & has already got 750 rds down the tube..I'm told that is the half life of that barrel..First one of these IMP. Br's for me so I don't know..I'd like to be able to use something with longer barrel life & less expense to practice with & get better wind reading skills..Thanks Mike n Ct

Ridgway only has 12#, and 17# gun classes to shoot steel silhouettes at 850,900,950 and 1000. So there are plenty of people doing 12# guns for long range steel. Plenty of people shoot dashers in the 12# class, Im not sure I would want to use a 223 at that distance, but thats my preference. If you want long life, and lighter recoil, I would probably build a 6br in a light gun.

Mike,

I can suggest contacting Greg Taylor:

Greg shoots F/TR with a .223 Rem. so he would have some good suggestions and probably some help also.

I have built .223's for practice rifles for both PRS and F-class. Lots of shooters prefer to practice with the lighter cartridge loaded with high BC bullets as opposed to full blown competition cartridges they usually use. 12 lbs. is not hard to do at all as long as you exercise some restraint with accessories. I am not a fan of Savage actions but there are lots of people who are, just my opinion. If I wanted an excellent practice rifle which was light, I might consider talking to Pierce about a Titanium action, or maybe X-treme Shooting for one of their Ti actions. Just remember as weight goes down, price goes up.

I think you could get a Curtis action and a great Bartlein barrel to build into a Manners Carbon Fiber stock and really have a rifle which can shoot, compete and be in the weight range you desire.

Regards.

I'm hearing you guys..I'd love to pop for a full blown custom rig..But I'm not working anymore..So I'm trying to cobble something together, from the spare parts I have on hand, and just a new barrel..The str8 6mmbr is a good long barrel life option..Trouble is, I'm used to using the more expensive Berger Bullets..That won't save me any money..Oh Yeah & my Nephew has been using my rigs.. So double all the expenses/barrel wear there...I use this set-up at Ridgway Rifle Club in Pa...The crows are tough for me & I waste most of my practice shots on them..That is how I thought about a 22 caliber high bc bullet just to practice with... mike n ct

I often see the thinner lighter barrels do well for the first 10 shots (out of 20) in F-Class matches. Then the barrels heat up and the scores in the 2nd 10 shots are much lower. The total number of shots and rate of fire are an important consideration. A sustained rate of fire of 1 shot per minute (or faster) will punish the lighter barrels, but they would do OK with fewer shots or a lower rate of fire.

.22 will have a lot more disappointment I think. I know when I shot my 22-250 in factory ground hog matches (9 twist) I was good up until 500, then any little wind blast and my group was blown up. I was shooting 69 grain smk's. IMO it will force you to be a better shooter and read conditions, but for 6br practice, why not build a light 6br? IMO 6br is hard to beat for cost. Low powder usage, long barrel life and if it gives you reason to buy more of the same bullets, seems like they would be dual purpose, same bullets for practice are what you would use for score. 105 hybrids cost ~$35 per hundred. .224 69 grain smk's cost $25 per hundred, and a little less powder, but nothing to write home about. You're only saving 10 - 15 cents a round.

Also, I'm not sure how much energy it takes to knock things over down range, but.....

Crows
at 850 the 69g .224 (assuming muzzle of 3000) has 176 ft/lbs energy
at 850 the 105 .243 (assuming muzzle of 2850) has 588 ft/lbs energy

Groundhogs
at 900 the 69g .224 (assuming muzzle of 3000) has 162 ft/lbs energy
at 900 the 105 .243 (assuming muzzle of 2850) has 545 ft/lbs energy

Bobcats
at 950 the 69g .224 (assuming muzzle of 3000) has 151 ft/lbs energy
at 950 the 105 .243 (assuming muzzle of 2850) has 505 ft/lbs energy

Coyotes
at 1000 the 69g .224 (assuming muzzle of 3000) has 142 ft/lbs energy
at 1000 the 105 .243 (assuming muzzle of 2850) has 468 ft/lbs energy

I know the Coyotes are the heaviest, but sometimes when hit with a 6br, they can fall awfully slow. 22 caliber bullets are very low on energy at this point.

yeah, the coyotes are just about around 40 pounds each..they take a good solid hit to knock over...Thanks for all that data...mike

I think you guys are right..pissing around w a 22 caliber centerfire is just not going to fit my style....$$$ spent on a new barrel should be the cartridge I shoot...Build it once, build it to needs of the game..Mike n Ct

I shoot a 12 pound 6.5 x 47 rifle at the Ridgway steel course.140 grain hybrids. This combination works well and recoil is very tolerable in a 12pound gun, with muzzle brake.
