115gr DTAC bullets in AR Platform?

I dont reload for the .243 as of yet but do plan on upgrading my LR243 to a faster barrel in the future as well as reloading for it.

My question is as follows;

Is there anyway to safely load the 115gr DTAC bullets so they have a overall length that will fit in the DPMS .308/.243 magazines which would be less than 2.820"?

Not really but....

You can and your gonna be jumping a long ways. There is no real safety reason (except back your loads down to start with) you cant do it but you wont get the velocities that the case can do when throated correctly. If you do get a minimal throat and it should work well for a while.

Thats a fair amount of bullet back inside the case it will keep velocity down. The ogive of the 115 and 107SMK are pretty close so if you can load 107's at 2.820 you should be OK.

It can't be worse than a mag length 77 in a 223. start low and work up a load.

It was just a thought I had. Forgive me if it was a dumb question. I am new to the 6mm and .243. I am just kicking around some ideas that would allow me to shoot long distances with my AR platform .243.

Not a dumb question! The magazine length limits a lot of potential bullets. You can get a fast twist barrel that will shoot the 115 and single load. If you want to use the magazine just shoot a shorter bullet. I have shot some 90 grain bullets in my fast twist bolt gun and they work fine.

Yeah. I have been shooting some 85grain Gameking bullets in my .243 with it shooting .30 at 100 yards. They are nice for sure. I have not tried to push them as I dont reload for this caliber yet. I only have what I can find on the shelf. That is not much unless I like 100grain hunting loads.

The .243 Win can shoot out to 500 yards with light bullets just fine. I use 80 grain Nosler ballistic tips and 87 grain Hornady V-Max out 500 yards regularly. The 115 DTAC can be used with an 8" twist, loaded to 2.710" oal. They can be loaded near max to attain velocities between 2600 and 2800 FPS with a 20" barrel in the DPMS LAR-243

That is nice to know. Right now my LR243 has a 1:10 twist but when this barrel is toast I plan to put a faster twist in it. Have you loaded the 115 DTAC to 2.710"? If so what load did you use?

Im just trying to get some ideas because I dont want to get such a fast twist if I wont be able to squeeze these bullets into my magazine. Am I wasting my time even thinking about this?

A fast twist is not for sure gonna hurt the accuracy of the lighter bullets if thats what your concerned about. I dont see you having problems if you are gonna hand load. One thing of note is never buy the factor ammo and seat the bullets deeper just to get them in the mag. You can create overpressure by doing this very easily.

Thanks for the heads up but so far that has not crossed my mind. I would def not want anything like that happening.
