115g berger bullets for a 30br

Ok,

I live in the uk, I've wanted to build a 30br benchrest gun for years, the problem that I have is that the only bullets of any quality that I can get are the berger 115g flat base. Has anybody tried them and how do they stand up against proper quality bullets ( bib, cheek etc).

Well IMHO, the Berger 115's are the next (not the same as the 118's) but the next best thing! I recently had a custom 30BR built on a Remington SA with a 1:18 Kreiger 24" barrel. I'm using both H4198 and AA2015 (different amounts) and shoot 5 shots groups (@100 yds) that are easily the size of a dime and less. It would take a miracle and a nice wallet to get any of Randy Robinette's 118BIB's. besides being able to get on his list. I've not tried anything other than the Sierra 110's which were good, but not as consistent as the Bergers. Personally, I think you'd do well with the 115's, but probably not as well as the 118BIB's. BTW, I'm still playing with seating to touching the lands and am now moving .005 off that to see if they get better. And lastly, keep in mind the action I'm using isn't what a Stiller, BAT or some other high quality action would get you, even if blue printed/trued, neither of which mine is because I do not compete, but shoot for pleasure and accuracy.

not a good endorsement in my opinion.
a dime is just over 0.7 with with a 308 bullet means a 0.4" group....not good enough.

i am shooting berger 110s til gone and then will switch to berger 115's( have 400)..and then with any luck some custom bullets.
i have just started with my used 30 br...but i am down to 0.180 for 3 shots at 100..all vertical......
so in my opinion, if you can get them shoot them !

As usual, we disagree and I see you are taking the whoosie route with your 3 shot groups. Shoot 6 consecutive BR targets shooting 5 shot groups and then lets see how they measure. And you obviously misread (as usual) my comment that a dime "easily" covers my 5 shot groups. I don't embellish group sizes like some folks I know of. Nice try Stool.....but the 115's (the main topic of discussion) do shoot well, at least for me and are certainly worthy of TRYING for the OP.

as usual you are mixing apples and oranges.
30br is TYPICALLY a score round, NOT typically a GROUP ROUND.(yes it has been done).
score is about repeatable shot position..NOT GROUP SIZE.

and i did say to shoot 'em.....

I'm not so sure the 6ppc is answer to 100/200yd benchrest. If I do my job on the bench and read the flags correctly , my 30br will shoot smaller groups than either of my sixes. The br was easier to tune and has a wider velocity window. Managing the extra recoil of the 30 sometimes compromises my consistency on the bench. The 115 Bergers perform admirably as do 118 BCB's.

Another option, if still available from him, are Knight 117 gr. bullets. I tried the Berger 110's and 115's in my 30BR and it is a good thing these barrels last a long time as I'm sure I would have worn out a couple trying to get mine to shoot the Bergers. I did find loads that worked but very small node windows and very temperamental in my gun (BAT w/Krieger bbl). As this seems to be contrary to what everyone says about this chambering, this is likely just my gun. It does shoot very well indeed with the 117 Knights, yet not the Knight 115's that I also tried. I gave up trying to get some of the other custom bullets. Not even a return phone call.

Haven't used my 30 in a couple of years but another good albeit lesser known bullet is the 118 gn Hillbilly bullet. Maybe a search will provide you contact info. Used to be pretty easy to obtain and priced well.
My gun didn't like the 115 Bergs much but I also didn't force the issue. I've also seen more experienced shooter use them and win.

Larry Moore from Tennessee if memory serves. They work.

Larry's bullets are excellent, as are most customs. I shoot with Larry and know him pretty well. He's a good guy and makes a very good bullet.

Agreed Mike, only purchased one lot of bullets from Larry but it was a fast top notch transaction. Hopefully someday I'll get back in the race and need some more. Hope Larry is doing well and say hi from a satisfied customer.

Cheek 112s are hard to beat and available with a reasonable wait and they shoot very consistently. The NBRSA VFS 100-200 agg world record was set last Sept with a 500-34X (250x25X at 100) using the 112s. Its been broken again early this year, but hey, the bullets work.

His 118s shoot well at both yardages, too. Ronnie offers 7 and 9 ogive on J4 jackets in both weights.
