115DTAC on fur

I have a T2K, chambered for the 6XC, shooting the 115DTAC @ a chronoed 2879fps. I have almost 250 rounds through the barrel. Now that I am more familiar with shooting the rifle I thought I would test it out on coyotes. My assumption was that the heavy target bullet would almost act like a full metal jacketed bullet. Boy was I surprised. I shot the coyote at the 1:30 position, just behind the right shoulder) and the bullet exited at the 7:30 o'clock...I think. I could not tell, as the entire offside of the coyote was missing. It looked like he had swallowed a hand grenade. All soft tissue, possibly a rib on the way in. Distance was a lasered 128 yards, with about a 15 degree down angle. I guess with a 7.5" twist it doesn't matter how the bullet is constructed. Things are gonna happen. Anyone else have this result with the 115DTAC bullet on flesh?

I am/was thinking about using the 105Amax for hunting deer and mountain lion, but am wondering if I will get the same results as the 115DTAC? I need a more fur friendly bullet, for this rifle. With the 7.5" twist am I looking in vain? Granted, one hot day does not make a summer, but..... bcott

bcott,
Having shot a fair number of critters out of the pickup window with my 6XC.
If the bullet has the tip meplatted I would expect to hear the pop of the bullet, associated with a good hit and expanding bullet) and quite a lot of tissue destruction.
I have even shot few wild hogs with mine - they are pretty tough to kill but with proper shot placement they drop almost in their tracks.

I can believe the "drop in their tracks" bit. I am just impressed with the performance of the bullet on so light skinned a critter. Although I have your tip tool I have only done the meplatting on my long distance rounds. Very impressive performance though. bcott

You guys are lucky....

Here in PA if we shot out of the pickup window we would be put in jail.

However, you may want to try the Nosler 95 gr partition bullet. If you make a good hit in the vitals the animal may go a way but will die. Also, the Nosler 95 gr ballistic tip will expand more and should produce a kill on the spot.

Both of these bullest should shoot well from the 6XC with a 1:7.5 twist.

The 115 DTAC is a bullet for competition and will expand/blowup on impact. Hunting is not for which it is designed.

When all is said and done, I will probably lug my 22/250AI around and use the 60grNosler Partition bullets, or 52gr Speer HPs,for everything but deer. I am sure that combo will do a deer, but most states require 23 caliber or larger or something like that. Then use my boring old 7/08 on any deer I happen to encounter. Yawn.... You know how it is with a new rifle...try to make it do EVERYTHING. bcott

I haven't tried the DTACs yet, but I have seen a bunch of critters, from groundhogs through whitetails killed with SMK's, and they kill things as dead as anythng else does. Neither te SMK nor the critters seem to realize what the bullet was designed for.
