115 grain berger for 6mm rem long range shooting

Well this bullet shoot reliably out to 1000yrds in a 6mm rem I was told it would not but want to ask for a second opinion . I really like the .551bc of this bullet . Looking to shoot coyotes and target out to 1000 yards . Any opinion would be great or should I go to a lesser grain bullet around the 100 grain mark or smaller . Cheers Jason

It depends on the twist in your barrel. 1 in 8 will work sometimes, but 7.5 is probably better. If your rifle is a factory gun, you are probably out of luck.

Jason, the Berger 115 works very well for me at 1000 yards from a 6XC at 2930 fps in a 1:7.5' twist Krieger. Your twist is a tad slower and we're on the marginal end of things anyway since Berger recommends a 1:7' twist. It's probably worth a box to experiment. Since all I shoot is paper, I can't offer any opinion on how it would perform in the hunting role at that distance.

A 7.75' twist is excellent for the 6mm 115 Bergers. I don't know why Berger publishes that you need a 1:7' twist,I think that's more than needed and I would caution you not to go that tight). By the way, it was not that long ago that the recommended twist on the Berger 115 gr boxes called for a 1:8' twist and when I spoke to Walt Berger on this he said he felt a 1:8' twist was very good in warmer conditions, but in winter conditions at low elevations that twist rate was 'on the edge'. I have a couple 1:7.8' twist barrels and I have shot the Berger 115's in 30 degree weather and had no issues with stability.

I suspect that a 1 in 7 twist is required in the 6BR. I have a 1 in 7, 6 BRX that shoots the 115 well. My 1 in 8 6BR does not. I would definitely try it in the 6mm with a 1 in 7.75 twist and see what happens. Ken

I shoot the 115s in a 1/7 broughton at 2830 and it does fine at 1k.

Ive been using the 115 Berger @ 1000 in Robert Whitley's 6mm Super X with good results. I have a TRUE 1:8 twist Satern cut rifle barrel. With that being said Im going to say that the 1:7.8 should be about perfect for that bullet with a little bit of insurance.
Go to the JBM balistics program and compare the 105VLD to the 115VLD and I think you will be suprised at how well that lil 105 performs at that distance. Both will take down a coyote at a real good distance. I have been using the 95gr VLD @ 3400fps+ in 243 AI. Its a dang Laser beem and death ray on coyotes. Speed kills. And from the sounds of it your up north and the coyotes are very hardy up there.

Ah -30* and your out calling coyotes. That my freinds is dedication. 15min walk to the calling spot, 15-20min calling and a 15min walk back to the truck. 45 min in a condition that could kill you in an hour if your not prepared. Nothing better than a Zero Deg. morning and the air is so crisp you could break it like a glass rod and zero wind. the sun peaking up over the praire. Awsome.

Try the 95vld. they work too.

It's true that in many,most) cases, the 115 VLD's don't require the recommended 1:7' twist. As many have indicated, slower twists are capable of stabilizing that bullet. I've shot them from a 1:8' 6mmBR to good effect in summer conditions just a little above sea level.
The intent of our published required twist rate is to give a value that is guaranteed to produce stability 100% of the time. Since we will err on the side of caution and we only deal in whole numbers for the recommended twist rates, sometimes the recommended value is very safe.
I wouldn't say there's anything wrong with using a 1:7' twist, but it's clearly not required for most conditions.
