115-1 in 8?

I have read that a 115 will and will not stabilize in a 1 in 8 twist rate for the 243 cal.So I assume that a combination of velocity, yardage and bullet length affect the stability.I have a 243win 1-8 twist that I would like to shoot 115's in,I would like to make use of the 243 powder column.your thoughts,thankyou...Sba

1:8" twist is, in my opinion, right on the edge with 115's - maybe you will have stability, maybe you won't. I had a few 1:8" twist barrels, two stabilized both the DTAC 115's and the Berger 115's, one did not stabilize either bullets,2" to 3" groups at 100 yards was about the best I could do with 115's, but 105's went into tight little knots). If you are shooting in summer conditions and not at sea level, you may be o.k. If you don't have a true 1:8" twist and/or have environmental conditions that are working against you, that may be a problem.

Robert is correct. I have a 5-C Broughton 1-8" twist that shoots the DTAC's just fine. The 115 VLD's are right on the edge, and if I drive them under 3,000 fps. I'm headed for trouble. As a side note, use a measured numeric value to confirm your rate of twist. Don't depend on the manufacturers stated claims. Some that claim a 1-8" twist are closer to 1-8 1/2" and that just won't make the grade with a 115 gr.
I hope this helps,

Like the others have said it is right at the edge. One barrel may do it just fine while the next may not. I would think the optimum twist would be 1:7.8 or 1:7.9 as long as they are going in the 2980+ fps region. I say this based on what I have experienced so far. So a Bartlein or a Satern who will sell you a twist specific barrel would be a good option. It apears that most Cut rifle barrels are closer to the true 1:8 twist advertized., I hope I didnt put my foot in my mouth there) Straight 243 is still a pretty good case for this weight class of bullets. Then again looking at the 243 ackley or 6mm Super X or the 6 CM it looks even better. : )

There ya go three folks who have experienced both sides of your question. Got to love this board.

Good luck sir and tell us how it turns out.

I have a 1 in 8 twist pacnor .243 AI that will shoot the fire out of the 115 DTACs. I live just about 100' above sea leave and its summer time. With a BC of around 585 and a velocity of 3250 its outstanding to 500 yards. My .243AI with the DTACs is just as, if not more, accurate than my 6mmbr with anything. Hard to beat the price of the DTAC too.

Cant wait to try out the new 111g bn coated Dtacs in my 1 in 8 twist 243, Those Dtacs along with the berger vlds are both fine bullets.

would it be safe to say the 243 AI could overcome the 1-8 twist gap with velocity useing 115's.

Frankie..
