110 gr Barnes TTSX in 270 Win

I loaded up some 110 gr Barnes TTSX with a top charge of IMR4350 last night & ran them thru the chrono. Barnes said that I was supposed to see a little over 3400 fps. I couldn't hardly believe what the chrono said the 1st shot - 3548 fps. Re-checked for square etc & ran another at 3530. Ran a 300 yd group that didn't look bad , definitely a whole lot flatter than the 130 gr bullets. I'll probably back it down 1/2 grain & check accuracy again.

Did you jump the 110's i can not get Barnes bullits to shoot in my 270 the 110gr v Max's shoot well.

Yes, I did but I can't really tell you how much. The seating dies are set for 130 gr Ballistic tips & I didn't change it at all. I'm jumping them about .010 so my GUESS would be in the .040-.050 range. Accuaracy is really an unknown at this point because I only ran 1 group but I plan on running a few more rounds in the next couple days if the conditions are favorable. Barrel is a Shilen 10 twist. I'll re-post any decent results & hopefully better data.

I shoot two loads with the 110g Sierra Pro Hunter and the 110g Tipped tripple shock:

58g of Win 760 with a Fed 210 primer (3350 fps)

57g+ of R#17, Fed 215, Bullet .050 jump (3550 fps)

Both of these loads shoot 1/2"-3/4 and the 58g of 760 shoots less than 1/2" much of the time(wind).

Don't underestimate the killing power of the 110g Sierra on deer at 3350 fps...they just flop.

Had a chance to run 1-5 shot x 100yd group last night off of hastily set up bags. 2 went into the same hole & the jerk behind the trigger rolled the rest horizontal. Looks decent but I'll run a better test tonight if the conditions hold. COL is 3.250 if that helps you at all. Haven't had an opportunity to check jump & probably won't for a couple weeks as vacation starts on Fri.

I tryed Keith's RL-17 load tonight at 100 & 300 yds. Velocity was superb at 3550+ and accuracy was good at both ranges. Slightly more speed than 4350 but considerably less recoil & blast. Looks like my "new" load for 2011, got to have something new every year to play with.

My 40 year old Model 70 loves those 110 TSX bullets with H4350. Despite having thousands of rounds down the tube it will shoot 3 shot groups of less than 1 moa consistently jumping around 50/1000. Play with the seating depth and you will find a real sweet spot. I think I tried Re17 but never found the right combination that would match H4350 for accuracy. Tom

Got back & playing around again, checking 100 & 300 yds. Very good accuracy with the RL-17. I'm running 59 grs @ 3560+ fps. Very flat. Basically put the dot on them to 350 yds. Far less recoil than with the 4350 which is a consideration in a light hunting rifle.

Accuracy with the R#17 was best in my rifle with a Fed 215 primer by far, bullet .050 off the lands. Also, the load was about 1.0g below what I would call a safe working max load for that rifle.

Lot# of R#17 vary, start off lower and work up. These 110g tipped tripple shocks are so accurate, all you will need for load testing is two shot groups...bullets should touch or just about touch at 100 yards.

I have had several 257 Weatherby's that shoot the 115's at 3350, and this load with the 110g at 3550+ just stomps the guts out of the 257 Weatherby load.

How does your 270 load with 110g bullets compare to the 257WM with 80g TTSX at around 3700-3800 fps or the 100g TSX at 3550-3600fps?

Velocity is close to the 100 gr load at 3550+ (3568) but I haven't shot anything but paper with the 110's yet. That will change in the next couple weeks. I expect them to be devastating like every other caliber that I've used them in. I was surprised to see that large of a velocity jump from 130's though.

I have one rifle that the accuracy node with the 110g tripple shock is at 3610 fps, tiny groups.

Barnes also has a 95g tripple shock, have not tried them yet...I used to shoot the Sierra 90's at 3600+ with AA2700, R#17 may put them another 100 fps ???? I don't know yet.

There is not much kick with the 270 with 57-58g of R#17, fed 215, and the 110g tipped tripple shock, I can speak of that!
