107 grin sierra.

orite chaps,i know the 107 grain sierra is a target bullet, but have any of you done any hunting, varminting with it,was just wondering if you have and how you went on with it..cheers Simon..

Never did any hunting of animals with it but I have hunted my fair share of milk jugs out to 750 yards with the 6BR. Results were inconsistent at best due to them tipping the bullets. Sometimes I would get a nice expansion and the jug would explode and other times it would just poke a nice hole. 0-400 yards they seemed to work really well and anything past that was a coin toss it either worked great or it didn't. Take that for what it's worth.

The fact that they are pointed probably means very poor expansion on a smallish target. I'd stick to shooting paper with them.

Guess I am just lucky. All I shoot in my XC. Have killed 40+ coyotes and 3 deer with the 107SMK ahead of 40gr of H4350. Never shot one twice nor have ever had a coyote go more than a few yds. From 100yds to 570yds, same results. Majority from 350 to 450yds. Deer never more than a step or two. In my defense all were standing shots and each bullet within inches of where it was intended. I realize the matchkings are not game bullets!

I have never understood WHY anyone would RISK wounding an animal, using a slug not intended for hunting.

Knew a guy who hunted elk with a .300 win and SMK's. Listening to him he NEVER lost an animal...One shot kills, etc. One time I am finally a witness to one of his 400 yd shots and as we hear the WHACK of the bullet the bull flinches and trots off. He trailed him a bit then that was it.

I know ONE instance a valid test does not make....but really? Why not use REAL hunting bullets?

So a 107 grain bullet @ 3000fps is not capable of a 'killing' shot because it doesn't have the proper shape/contruction? Hmmmm,......wonder how many of our finest died in Europe, the Pacific Theatre, Vietnam and the middle east from bullets 'designed' to be "not lethal"???? Dead is Dead and I NEVER shoot with the intent of just wounding an animal, my intent is a clean kill whether a coyote, a pdog or any other animal.

In fact I am just a bit offended that I might be accused of taking a shot that is a "risk wounding" situation, every shot could actually be a "risk" unless you can guarantee and prevent everything that could alter it. Not real easy to do IMO. Shot a nice chocolate black bear north of Whitefish just west of the ski lift a mile or so in the side of the head in '95 @ 80yds with a 300 Wea using a 180 Sierra Pro Hunter. Dropped like a rock and within 2-3 minutes was trying to get back up. That "intended hunting" bullet broke that small flat bone under his eye and came apart with no further damage. Is that how "REAL hunting" bullets are designed to function?

Just asking so I get it right from here forward? I apologize if I am taking your comments wrong but kinda hard to interpret them any other way as written!

Edit/Add just to clarify....I AM NOT advocating using Match/Target bullets for hunting, OP asked if anyone has used the 107SMK for hunting/varminting and their results. I am just stating that thus far I have used them with 100% success on coyotes and a handful of deer. I wouldn't dream of buying and using match/target bullets solely for hunting animals as it has been stated correctly that they ARE NOT designed for expansion/tissue damage. Would never shoot an elk, moose or even a bear with one, I would use a premium hunting slug for such. Now if all I had was match/target bullets in a rifle and a charging brownie I might reconsider!!!! So please don't take my comments as pro hunting for non pro hunting designed slugs.

Respectfully,
Dennis
