105 burger clicks

I am shooting a 6x47 lupua using a 105 Burger VLD at 3101 fps,40.2 H4350, CCI 450).Load shoots great at 200. I use a Nightforce 12x42 benchrest scope,1/8 click),set on 42x, Kelbly tall rings,2.5 scope height), no added MOA to the base.. I have it zeroed at 200 yards. Do any of you guys know from experience how many clicks to go up for 300, 400, 500 yards? Thanks, Dan

Dan,

You can calculate drop with many of the ballistics programs available including FREE PointBlank Software.

Berger claims a 0.556 BC for that bullet. I've had better luck knocking off 0.010, yielding an 0.546. Running Point-Blank, assuming a 200-yard zero, here is your drop in inches:

300: 5.77" drop, divide by 1.047"/three for MOA, then multiply by 8 for clicks; so 14.7 clicks up)

400: 16.59" drop, divide by 1.047"/four for MOA, then multiply by 8 for clicks; so 31.7 clicks up)

500: 33.24" drop, divide by 1.047"/five for MOA, then multiply by 8 for clicks; so 50.8 clicks up)

Different density alitudes can affect these numbers. Also, the BC of a bullet is not absolute, but varies through its flight. So, these numbers could be off by a few clicks. but this should get you on paper.

Thanks for the reply. I ran my Load From a Disk and got those same numbers. When I shot at 200 today It took 22 clicks to go the 6 inches, 65 to get the 17 inches then I maxed out at 80 clicks and with the bottom dot on my NPRDD only got 30 inches total. Something doesn't seem right. Further testing: 15 cl= 4-3/4", 33 cl= 9", 42 cl=11-1/4", 56 cl=14-3/4". Shot nice little groups at each setting and they climbed straight up but the clicks just don't work out. Thanks again, Dan

Something is weird here. Either you're going a LOT slower or maybe you're not really zeroed at 200??

I ran the numbers again with QuickTarget, using Berger 105 VLD factory BC and .125 MOA per click. Here's what it predicts: 14.5 clicks for 300 yards, 31.3 clicks for 400 yards, 50.5 clicks for 500 yards.

If you're nowhere near that, perhaps you have a scope issue??

QuickTarget Output:

No WAY you should need 65 clicks to get to 400, even with a 100-yard zero. I'm starting to think there's a serious scope problem.

Dan,

If you are testing your 300, 400, 500 click values by shooting at 200 yards, you will NOT get the desired changed drop value by trying to move POI at 200 by the same amount,e.g. 5.77" for 300 yds). That's NOT how it works.

You must check that drop value at the proper distance, i.e. 300, 400, 500.

Meaning, if you need 14.5 clicks to zero at 300,to compensate for 5.77" drop), this WILL NOT move the point of impact 5.77" higher at 200. NOT AT ALL!

14.5 clicks should move your 200-yard POI up 3.79" on a target set at 200 yards.,15 clicks should be 3.92" up shift).

To move the point of impact 5.77" inches,2.75 MOA) higher at 200 yards, you'll need 22 clicks -- which is what you dialed. But you'll find that will be TOO MUCH elevation when you actually move your target to 300.

Methinks your scope is fine.

Thank you very much for the reply and for taking the time to do the math. That is so good to hear. I just got the scope and yes that is what I was doing, shooting at 200). My range only goes out to 200. I will test Sunday at the correct yardages. Again thank you, your input was most appreciated. I was kinda bummed thinking the scope was bad. Dan
