1000 yard coyote chambering?

Fellows, what are your thoughts on the optimum chambering for shooting a coyote at 1000 yards or so? I've been shooting a fast twist 22-250 with 75 gr. amax's with good results out to 600+ yards, and fair results at 800. At 880 & 900 yds I really seem to be struggling. I see a LOT of vertical dispersion (20+ inches), I think I may be running out of steam? I've got a 22-6mm barrel set up for 80gr. Amax's, haven't tried it past 600 yet, but I'm wondering if a .22 is the best choice for this kind of distance? Maybe I should try a .260 Rem. or a 6.5-06 for the improvement in B/C? I'd rather avoid a belted magnum if possible, but maybe I should consider a.300 or 7mm magnum?

How about a 284 or 7 rsaum? Good bc, no belt, and super accurate. If you in an area that isnt super windy you could try a dasher too.

I think I would try the 6SLR , 1-8 or 1-7.5 twist and run 105 or heavier..

I have a friend who is a guide on a ranch in South Texas where you have "senderos" which are really shooting "lanes" that reach past 1000 yards. He has a 22-6mmRem that shoots 80gr A-Max's. He has killed feral hogs and deer out to 1000yards with that rifle. If you keep your "e.s.'s UNDER 15f.p.s. and shoot say 3/4" to 1.25" @ 300 yards, you will not have ANY problems killing coyotes out to 1000+... Now if you are shooting out that far with wind as a considerable factor, go 7mm (.284 / Shehane, SAUM WSM etc..) and you will be hitting them more often and with considerable authority!

Any 6mm that will shoot a 87 gr Vmax. Great long range varmint bullet. I had a few 6AI running them at 3500 f/s but the barrels don't last very long, but it does better than the hot 22 cals. I shoot 6BR and 6BRX now with the 87gr. They will be hard on fur, but will do he job. The heavier bullets will just punch thru.

I had that challenge - a family member that had a spread with a serious feral dog problem. I first tried a 300 Win Mag with 178 A-Maxs (Hornady said they would explode like V-Maxs - Ha!... never happenin'!!). That was a failure, the 178 A-Maxs went right through them.

Then I went to a Remington 700 Sendero-II in .264 Win Mag with 95gr V-Maxs and it is outstanding.

WOW!! I bet that make a heck of a thump when it connects on a hog! Whew. The 120's out of my 6.5-06 thump them pretty hard, I can only imagine the 95vmax. WD

Well here u go 22DASHER 8/Twist for 75vld's or 80gr vld's or a 7/Twist for 90gr vld's you want have a problem at that range I love mine.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. I'm really surprised there's so much support for the 6mm stuff. I sort of thought I'd hear I needed some kind of long action 6.5mm, 7mm, or .30 caliber. I was thinking the 6.5-06 might be the ticket, but I have ZERO experience with that chambering. Maybe my 22-250 isn't as inadequate as I think? I'm getting somewhere around 3030 fps with a 75 gr. amax (BC .435). I could go hotter, no pressure signs, slightly below the Hornady manual max? Wind is always a factor at these kinds of distances, I thought a heavier, higher BC bullet would help? Thanks for the advice, keep it coming,

We have used the 168 Berger match vld out to 800-1000 and it easy with a 7mm rsaum, we have no vertical issues gun shoots half moa or better at these ranges. If you want to make a mess use a Hunting VLD or 175 grain nosler partition.

What would be wrong with a 243 win or 243ai?? That is my long range varmint gun. I shoot 70 grain speer tnt or 95 vld. I don't have allot of wind here but out to 1k coyotes no problem. If you have much wind I would go for the 260 rem. Matt

6SLR is easily made with .243 brass
