1000 yard Benchrest shoot offs

I use a backup gun because we don't get points for shoot off. I am working on a new gun because my main gun won't last forever. Matt

In Montana we dont have any other ranges close by to gain points at. So you really have no chance of gaining enough soy points to matter, unless you break a world record or two. So with that said, the only reason to win a shoot off is bragging rights and club money. I personally would not shoot my best stuff in the shootoff and most guys here dont, or they use it to test another load or something like that. The relay targets are the ones most guys care about. The yearly 6 and 10 target agg is what really matters in my opinion. That tells the story of how well you shot consistently. Points tells you how much you won and how many matches you shot. I would say that the best shooters here are shooting for aggs.

I used my best to get myself INTO the shootoffs :), and because of the fact that towards the end of my compeditive career I really didn't do any decent load development, I would test during the shoot offs.....and usually loose!! :( :(

I do not recomend this process, as getting ones ass kicked in every shootoff tends to make the sport less enjoyable!!

If the shoot doesn't matter then why would someone shoot . I believe winning relays Should only qualify to get in a shoot off .
Only the best man wins in the same conditions . Larry

Well here is my two cents the 1000yd IBS format is set up if you win a relay you advance to the shoot off for the match win under the same conditions personally the match win is most important Alex mention something here about the way they do it in montana the difference is they are a relatively new club they have one agenda is to try an break all the existing long range agg records which is fine most shooters in the 1000yd the shoot off is important if they are fortunate to win a agg record it is a good thing but its not priority shoot to win is the name of the game an the enjoyment of spending time shooting with your new earned friends

My shooting has always been about small groups. I never cared about score, or points. Alot of times I'd just make sure I was on paper, I didnt care if the group was in the 8 ring. I do at least try to center it up now. Different things drive different people.

My first season I thought it was fun to get into shoot-offs and win but as much work as it takes to get a barrel to shoot really small I'm not sure its worth it now. Now come August that might be a different story, but I would like to keep my barrel shooting as small as possible for as long as possible. It is fun to win but at the same time the money spent on components and the time spent tuning makes it painful to watch a barrel die for bragging rights.

The guys here do take the season aggregates very serious. We do shoot to win, the match just takes 5 weekends to complete.

Some of the guys really love the shoot offs, and continued on with the sport because we switched to the ibs and it's format. I would guess maybe half or better shoot there best/only rifle here also.

Maybe when I'm retired I'll put the same effort in. I'm now into 7 pieces of brass for match 1 light gun, and 7 pieces for match 2 light gun 7 hours and 20 minutes! I have weekends to do all this crap lol. I either need to retire, or not care if I shoot benchrest level accuracy with any sort of repeatability:D

In my opinion, we all shoot for different reasons. Some only shoot to win, some shoot to set records and some just enjoy shooting in general as I do and I also enjoy the fellowship. There is no one answer. It's expensive, time consuming and hell, its WORK! Enjoy your preference!

Well if you shoot the 1000yd discipline when you have opportunity to tune your loads at the distance we shoot you have a much better chance to be competitive if you tune at lets say 100yds or say 300yds it is a crap shoot when you go to a match if you have a chance at getting in a shoot off an shoot your best stuff an you beat a champion class shooter you relish that moment even though it is a rare moment I had a chance for a agg score record I was excited about it an I had a world class shooter supporting me at the last match that I had to achieve this record an I failed after the match was over we drank a cold budlight an said oh well didn't lose a minute of sleep over it go out there an enjoy your shooting with your friends an try your best to be there on game day against your champions an take the wins against those people that worked hard to be were they are an cherish those moments of glory an try to do it again another day.

I saw times at White Horse that you try to average the condition to keep ten on the paper. Sometimes it was a laugher for sure. The wind trumps the best shooting guns at times...... jim
