1000 yard benchrest loads

I've always been a big believer in the fact that to shoot small groups at 1000 yards, you need 2 things to happen.

#1 - Conditions have to allow it. Calm mornings, no mirage, etc.
#2 - You have to be prepared for when that happens. By that I mean your rifle has to be tuned to shoot small groups, so when that relay finally comes up you are prepared and ready to roll.

It's no coincidence that the same group of guys shoot the smallest stuff. They are also the same group of gentleman that spend the most time working on loads, loading late into the night, getting up early at the butt crack of dawn, etc. Like everything in this world, those that put the most time into it, usually are the most successful.

@INTJ
Sadly, no format being used is perfect. But the "relay qualifiers to a shoot-off" format, and the "relay ranked" system are the fairest -IMO
Each to our own here and respect your opinion. I myself feel the NBRSA formats are the unfairest of the 3 sanctioning bodies.

@dmoran. At a match, sometimes I expect that I will do well among fellow competitors. Sometimes I expect that I am there so my fellow competitors can do well......... :D

I shoot both IBS and NBRSA matches like many on here. Both have the +s and -s. I like the IBS format based on Donovan's explanation above. Relay winners go head to head in the shoot offs. Problem with IBS is there isn't enough shooting for score. NBRSA does shoot more but relay draws can be a determining factor in outcome.

Formats can be picked apart. We could even discuss shooters on the same relay and who had the best bench assignment.

Bottom line, I like shooting both and am always looking for opportunities to shoot more.

Good shooting.

Rich

My way of draws for your relay would be draw chips out of a bucket, Pa 1000 yard club this year, will have 15 benches and the worst relay for 90 shooters would be the 6th relay. I'd take a 6th every match if they let me. A Lot better than using 10 benches and going to 10 relays. Would like every ones thoughts on that. And I don't want to hear from the cry baby's that say, know I have to shoot against 5 more shooters

I shot that match. The relay lineup you show is incorrect. There were four relays. I personally shot fourth relay the first day and first relay the second at 1000. I was second and third relays for 600. I wound up #6 at 600 and #12 at 1000. Meaning over the four days I shot in all four relays. Had this been an IBS match I would have DNQ’ed the first day at 1000 HG when a squib load didn’t make it on paper.

Often conditions are different on different benches in the same relay—seen that often. The only way to make it truly fair is to shoot in a tunnel.........

When you look at big picture, the same shooters seem to rise to the top over the long run. They do better than others regardless of the relay they shoot.

If you don't get on the paper who's fault is that? How about they just give away participation trophy's. If I DQed I feel I deserved to head home. The guys that stayed on the paper, should be worth something...... jim

I really need to keep out of discussions, but some of this stuff I just cannot let stand. In NBRSA you get a 10" penalty for each shot off paper and zero score, so the guys that stay on paper always do better. However, you still get to shoot, and getting to shoot is the whole reason we participate in this sport. DQ is a poorly thought out idea in a sport where we are struggling to grow participation. If we are unable to grow participation we'll cease to even have LR BR and be forced shoot at large targets on our belly................

The shooter is responsible for shots not on target, it's a liability ( where did that bullet really go ). Liability of the range could lead to it's closure of a firing line, or the entire range ( I believe Manatee had a 1000 yard problem ). They stopped matches at Perry for boats in the lake inline with the impact area.

BTW, what's wrong with shooting from your belly?
