100 /200 yard 6PPC bbl length ??

got a Krieger 4 groove #17 HV .237 13.5 twist bbl for my Farley action.Leonard stocked bench rifle,,,to be shot at 100/200 yard UBR score matchs,,,what is the secret bbl length that will do the best in that match,,seems some guys shooting short bbls shot long scores??

any advice appreciated..

I'll tell you up front that I only know what I read, but I did read in "The Secrets of the Houston Warehouse" that 21 3/4 inches is the magic number. Others can verify or dis me!

21 3/4 is common with LV rifles with LV barrels where we need to make 10.5 lb weight
24" HV contour is not uncommon for a HV Rifle

I always thought the length played a big part in the weight requirements of the rifle, of course profile had something to do with it as well......

Everything else being equal I would suggest that the shorter barrel would be slightly more accurate and the longer slightly faster. Getting the best balance would be what I would look for . Other than that I don't see much difference. If you are going to shoot the rifle in Unlimited Class, then none of it would matter. If you are trying to keep it under 13.5 lbs then it might. UBR rules simplify a lot of things.

As others have said, within the LV class, many or most barrels are between 20-1/2 and 21-1/2" long. They have proven to shoot very well at this length but weight has been the driving reason moreso than other factors. In UBR, there's no reason to go that short unless you feel like that length is the magic one to go with, as there is no 10.5 lb class in UBR. The small cases we use in short range br, and the powder/bullet selection we use, make for a very efficient case that has done most of what it's going to do in that length. Very little to be gained from a longer barrel from a velocity standpoint, and they have proven to be accurate at these lengths, too.
I'd do as Rick suggested and go for balance more than a magic number on a ruler.--Mike

I`ve got it marked at 23" to crown. Let me know if you would like it somewhere else.

Crown is finished, multiple passes before I got it right, but it is right....!
