10.5Ibs short range rifle stock

I have a Stolle Grizzly II that I'am going to use for a LV class and was looking at ordering a JTR or Borden stock from Felso Composites but they can only get them down to about 28oz., so is it worth starting with this stock weight or should I be looking for something lighter?

28 ounces is on the upper end for a LV stock with a SS action that tops 32 ouneed.

The truth is the only stocks that get down in the 23 or less ounce range are the Scoville, theScarborough, and the McMillan Edge. It takes months to get these.

If you keep the scope weight down to less than 24 ounces and do not use a tuner, you should be ok as long as you keep the barrel at 80 ounces or less.

Here are pictures of the major components. The scope is a 45x Leopold. The barrel is a 78 ounce 21 inch Bartlien.1449B7C7-EB0A-4351-B9D0-3C01DACABCA8.jpegAdd the stock and 32 ounces for the grizzly 11.2C08B60B-7184-49B1-8683-6EDFC8ACAF57.jpeg

Thanks Jackie.....I finally got the rest of the parts and came up with 8Ibs 9oz so it would be very tight.

Making weight is as tough as shooting a teen agg. Here's the weight budget for an upcoming build of mine.

My action is a little lighter because it's a dual port. Because I like to use a scope level (anti-cant) and a tuner, I have to be very creative. Keeping the barrel weight below 5# is a must. 78-79 ounces is a good target. I like tall scope rings but run a combo (1 double screw and 1 single screw) set of rings. You can save an ounce or so if you feel comfortable using standard height rings.

A Nightforce 42X runs under 21 ounces but you'll have to find one in the aftermarket as they have been discontinued. The March 48X is a great scope but pricey. A Valdada 36X is similar weight and used models in the aftermarket are excellent values. The upgraded Valdada 40X is almost the same price as the March 48X and at that price level, I'd rather have the March.

If you're not utilizing a tuner, things become a lot easier.

HTH. Good luck!

I will add that my McMillan Edge stock came in at closer to 24 ounces. It appears the Scoville and Scarbrough stocks do consistently run close to the 22 ounce mark.

I recognize these are small differences. But when your teetering on either side of the 10.5# target, every quarter ounce is important.

I have a few option on scopes and wanted to use a Sightron 36X45 but I have a Leupold 35X and Leupold 36X if I have to. I need to get the weight on everything and make a chart like that so I don't have to go get the scale every time I start to think about this. I use to shoot IR50 and this is much easier than building a 7.5Ibs rifle for there sporter class.

That Leupold 36x is about as light of a Benchrest Scope as was ever made. They weigh around 16 ounces, A Tucker Conversion makes one pretty darned reliable.

also, keep in mind, any new stock you buy will have to be bedded, which might add another 2to 3 ounces.

FWIW, the Sightron 36X45 comes in a skosh under 19 oz. w/o turret covers or lens caps.

Good shootin' -Al
