10/22 Smithing

I picked up a 1-12 twist match barrel off ebay. I was thinking of using this in the sporter class during my next match. I've never done any 10/22 gunsmithing and was wondering if there was any caveats I should be aware of before I begin.

Thanks,

Rob

I f you bought a barrell for a 10/22 as a replacement it is probably not a 12 twist,, most are 16 twist. Installation is easy.. Neil

I noticed most were 1-16... This one was listed as follows:

Stainless steel .920 target/match grade barrel 12 hole port with recessed target crown
Match chamber
This barrel is un fired and brand new.
1-12 twist rate button rifling

I've also picked up a ProMag stock, which isn't exactly sporter legal, but my current stock is for tapered barrels.

Any good references or techniques for bedding the 10/22?

i have had no problems doing the work myself on 10/22s. i am currently working on one now. planning on using a kidd 16.5" barrel and another hogue overmold stock. what is the barrel maker that you bought?

hmmm, never heard of them

That makes two of us, and even google is stumped.

We'll see how it shoots. I didn't want to spend a ton of money on a Sporter Class gun. If it shoots well, great. If not... Anything is better than the barrel I have now, which probably has 50000 rounds through it.

Im no expert but that twist it too fast for a 22 long rifle. Stick with major brands you'll be better off. Kidd makes some very accurate 10/22 barrels. I had a Green Mt that shot 3/4 at 50yds. Buy once cry once. I built a all out Ruger and was never happy with its accuracy. Should have just bought a complete rifle.

1 in 12 isn't too fast for a 22 long rifle, just different from the norm. The fastest twist barrels chambered for 22 rimfire that commonly show up are 1 in 9, made primarily for the Aguila 60gr SSS round, which is admittedly a bit of an oddball. In the 1 in 9 barrels, "normal" 34gr to 40gr 22LR rounds tend to shoot more accurately than the 60gr SSS round shoots in 1 in 16 twist barrels. I wouldn't worry about the 1 in 12 twist barrel; put it together and see what happens - if it shoots, fine, if not, back to the drawing board. Also, grab a patch, a cleaning rod and a magic marker and see just what the twist is, just for kicks. Keep us posted.

I bought a Hall BR rifle from an experimenter. It came with a couple of 14 twist bbls. What I have found is that the fast twist bbls really 'take off' on you when the condition changes even a little bit.

I think what is happening is that the bullet is spinning a lot faster and this adds more vertical component to any condition change. Whereas a 16 twist might move half a ring up or down depending on the new condition the faster twist would move a whole ring or more vertical plus a little extra horizontal component.

I am eventually going to fit up a BR spec RF bbl to an AR15. Something around .850 diameter, about 24" long and a tuner. I will probably use a Bentz reamer although I may try a BR reamer at first. It will be interesting to see how it works out.
