What is the smallest 6.5mm cartridge suitable for hitting a gong at 1 mile?

Please specify what size gong you are thinking of.

I shoot the mile at Thunder Valley all the time with my 6.5 Creedmoor, 135 A-Tips, at 2750 fps, and it has no problem making it that far. The problems arise if the wind is above 10 mph as it pushes my bullets so far that I sometimes can't see the splash.

I’ve seen a 6.5 Grendel & 6.5x47L both hit gongs @ 1 mi…
I’ve used a 6BR, 6 dasher, 6BRAI to hit the gong @ 1 mi.

So it’s your choice-

My cousin had a 260AI to hit it.
Although we we used broken disk blades as gongs, it’s the only distance he didn’t punch through at.

Our one mile target at CRC is 39" x 48". We got a donation of 3/8" AR steel sheets from an indoor range.

I have had success with a 260 and also a 6.5 Creedmoor at 1 mile shooting 1 MOA targets at the NRA Whittington Center near Raton, but that is at 6500 ft elevation. I have not attempted this at near sea level conditions.

That was my first thought but I am hoping to avoid a long action.
.260 Rem / .060 FB / 1'30" leade
Will fit in 2.800" .308 mags with 153.5 Bergers
I'd loan ya my reamer for a small fee but I got a 3 deg leade angle and supposedly that can be problematic with VLD's
Wasn't in my case though, shot 153.5's better than anything, 147 ELD-m's almost as well
A guy who never shot 600 yds before, printed a 2 inch 3 shot group with it first try

Or go 260 AI for extra speed, but I dont know the length difference to call out the freebore

Steve,

The 284 cartridge case is the same length as a 308 or 260 or 243, +/-. So, bullet length is the limiting OAL factor; be it a 6mm or 257 or 6.5mm. The 284 has about the same case capacity as a 30-06, so velocity will be close.

The posters' cartridge length tendency here leads me to the ultimate: 221 Fireball with a 90gr Berger. It will go thru the Transsonic range at about 320 yards, and restabilize by 350. It will also work in a short action like a 223.

I am very encouraged at those of you using a 260 and even more so at Gabe's go at a mile with a 6 BR.

I will go to Thunder Valley this summer and have a go at 1,000 yds with my 6 BR. Then I'll decide if and with what cartridge.

Thanks for all the good info!
