1:9 223 Rem longer range target load

Hi folks,

I enjoy shooting my CZ527 in .223 Rem and 1:9 twist.

It seems to like shooting the 65gr Gameking SBT and 25gr of Ramshot TAC.

Anyone got some recommendations for a high 60s low 70s target bullet for longer range shooting?

My 1:9 Fulton Armory 20” AR-15 shoots 77 IMI, 77 gr SMK Federal gold metal match, and Federal Premium 73 gr Berger to 547 yards with amazing accuracy.

It shoots that box ammo so well, that I don't bother hand loading for it.

The barrel on my savage is a 1 and 9 twist and stabilizes the Berger 70g. VLD quite well. Very accurate and above average B.C. Likes to be into the lands though.

Those 70 VLDs shoot well, even from mag length out of ARs. I will not hesitate to shoot them at 600. Heck, we even shot 69 Sierras at 600 back in the day.

+1 again on Berger 70vld.

Sierra 68, Hornady 68, Berger 73.

Try, but don't commit to a 500cnt box first; the 75 and 77gr bullets; they're marginal in. A1:9 in some conditions, but I've seen some 1:9 shoot them just fine at 400+.

Regardless of BC will be your wind reading abilities, so don't worry about squeaking out that extra 0.3MOA of ballistics when the 10MPH full-value is measured in feet at long range.

Some years back had a 1-9 Krieger on a AR , 75gr, JLK VLD behind R-15 at 600 yards did very well ?

Back in the 90s a good friend and mentor, a transplant from Vermont, Paul Laberge, bought a Winchester with 9T barrel. He shot the 75 JLK VLDs, with those bullets, coupled with his skills, he posted some impressive scores at 600.

One time we went out of town to shoot in what we thought was across the course. It turned to be 3x600. Paul won the 1st match with the 75s, and won the 2nd with his 69 SMK short line ammo

Nosler 70 RDF or better yet 77RDF with a healthy dose of 2000MR will work in a 9 twist. I shoot at mag length 26.6g 2000MR with fantastic results, 20 " barrel. 2825 FPS, BC on the 77's listed at .454, better than most 80 class bullets

How do you find the precision with those 77 RDFs? I've been thinking about giving them a run in a gas gun. However, I've loaded the 85 RDFs for an F-TR bolt rifle and the precision seemed to be so-so, usually a flier or two in almost every group. My understanding is that the 85s might do better seated at ~.050" off the lands, but I haven't tested them that far off at this point. Just curious about the 77s, they look awesome on paper.

Shot the 77RDF at 300 yds rapid fire during a 4 day match last weekend. Out of a possible 700 points (200 on thurs, fri, sat and 100 sunday) I dropped 9, rapid fire in 4 days using AR-15, 20" 7tw barrel service rifle 4.5 power leupold scope. Mag length, LC brass, cci 450, and 26.6g 2000mr.

Shot the 85 RDF at 600 yds, 40k off the lands all 4 days. If memory serves correctly, 2.365 OAL in my gun. Shot very well. Quite capable of holding the 6" X ring at 600. LC brass, cci 450, 26.7g 2000mr.

Temps were in the 90's every day and had no issues with above load data. Took a photo of 1 rapid fire prone group and it's about an inch tall at 300. The 85's at 600 have a big advantage over any 80 class bullet requiring less wind adjustment. RDF's might not give the smallest groups but out of a service rifle we shoot at generous targets and after a fair amount of testing, I'm confident both loads above will deliver 1/2 min groups easily. Additionally, I'm testing with a 4.5 power scope.

To answer your question fully, I've shot the 70, 77, and 85 RDF in 22 cal. The 105 and 115 RDF in 6mm. The 130 and 140 in 6.5mm. 175 and 210 in 30 cal and 300g in 338 Lapua Mag. I have never loaded an RDF bullet less than 40k off the lands. They love to jump. In my 6mm bolt gun I'm at 65k off the lands. They seemed to shoot really well there.

We're finding they like to be spun fast too. Min 7 twist in 22 cal. 6mm been using 7.5 twist but a friend is using a 7. 6.5mm I have a 7.75 krieger but same friend bought a 7 twist and it devours the 140's. He shot a 200 with 17x prone in a sling at 600 recently. 30 cal are 10 twist. 338 is a krieger 9.35 twist.

69 smk, 69 tmk, 70 VLD, 77 smk, and 75 Horn.BTHP work great in my 20" 223r 9" twist.

70 VLD are the most consistent day to day, but they're more money and not available all the time where I'm at, and I don't use this 20" 223 for matches so I don't use the 70 VLD often.

Favotite F class load. 69g Nosler Competition, BR 4 primer, 25.4g Varget. In a 26 in Savage Model 10. Has shot in the .3s at 300m.
ADI 5.56 cases.

70vld 25.0gr varget; cci450 and LC brass loaded to 2.255 does great for me. Berger has some good vld seating depth advice.

Best rounds out of my factory 9 twist, shooting out to 750 yds were the 69 gr Sierras, MKs and TMKs and Lapua Scenars. Although the stupid light but fast 53 gr V-Max also did well at that range, I guess the exceptional B.C. helps. You might also try the 73 gr Berger. It's seems to be more available, and it shoots very well out of my 8 twist Criterion. Haven't tried it yet out of the 9 twist.

68 Hornaday bthp, CFE. 223 out to 550 yards. Out of a 20" barrel. Shoots plenty good enough for banging steel. Prairie dog popper at 300-350 no problem.

YES I SHOOT 68GR BTHP IN A 9TW SAVAGE TACTICAL BOLT AND THEY DO WELL FOR ME WITH VARGET
