1:7 twist .223 bullet Q

I have a new Savage with a 1:7 twist, my first experience with a 1:7. I know that the upper end is in the 80-90g range, but what is the practical lower limit on bullet size/weight? 60g? Can I shoot 52/53's? Or just load up some different stuff and see which bullets still make it to the target?

I have a Savage 7 twist, and it shoots 60 grain vmax's pretty good. Mostly I use 77/80 grain bullets.

If you shoot good bullets over spinning is not much of a problem. You'll reach pressure limit a little quicker and won't get the velocity you would out a slower barrel.

For years I shot 52-53gr SMK's in my AR with a 7 twist barrel. Since these were 100yd High-power matches I loaded them with just enough powder to cycle the weapon. NO problem! I was amazed at the accuracy. The barrel lasted a long time too!

Thanks for the input! Sounds like all the stuff I have on hand for the 1-9 and 1-12's I shoot will also work fine in the 1-7.

I shoot 50gr TNT bullets from my 1:8 twist I shoot with a few guys who have 1:6.5 tubes cut for the 90’s and they shoot the 52 and 53 gr match bullets pretty accurately. Some days it is fun to shoot those light little bullets at 200yds. You really have to be on your game to get good scores at 200.

Fast twist may have light bullets coming apart if pushed too fast. If you load it hot for short range accurracy, best to use solid copper bullets. My .02....

Some of my best groups in a Savage 1 in 7 twist and 1 in 8 twist was with the Sierra SMK.
