1:14 twist in a 6mm for varmints

I like the accuracy I have gotten out of my 6mmPPC, and enjoy shooting it.
I am considering using it as a varmint rifle.
My question is this...My shots will probably never go past 400 yards. I am using basically 68 grain bullets. Am I exceeding the limits of this cartridge?
I have been using a 66 grain hollow point bullet for years shooting woodchucks out to 150 yards, and most the time the bullets do not even exit the critter. Sometimes can't even tell if I hit it or not. I love the terminal damage not to mention the almost instantanious dispatching of the critter.
Thanks!!

I believe the more significant issue is the ability to make an accurate shot at 400 yards on a critter with a small vital area with wind and mirage potentially affecting the shot.

You're looking at a vital area of about 2 1/2 to 3" at best. If that bullet is sub 1/2 moa in your rifle and it's a varmint designed bullet, then you should be able to make a clean shot assuming you have the skill to make a shot at that distance.

You can easily verify that by placing a target out at 400 yards and shooting a 3 to 5 shot group in the manner you intend to hunt. It might be sobering.

PS: 6mm bullets that I have used successfully but in the 243 Win are: Sierra 80 Blitz, 85 BTHP, Nosler 70 BT. However, all my shots are under 300 yards which is the limit of my skill shooting off shooting sticks.

I don't know what velocity you're getting but Hornady makes a 58 grain VMAX. I looked at the 6MM PCC load data and using a 58 VMAX should get you some increased hydrodynamic performance at the velocity ranges out to 250 to 300 yards.

Varmint shooting takes many forms, the ballistic solutions vary but long range, high shot count has limited safe solutions. Successful short, mid-range high wind possibilities require hyper velocities mid weight per caliber varmint bulletts.

In your situation the ranges I mentioned with low and moderate constant winds should be safe, ethical and fun if you can get the rifle to average 2" or less at 300 yards.

60 GR Sierra Varminter is an extremely accurate bullet in my 6BR. May not have the best BC at 400. I would try it.

Just substitute your match bullets with a 58 grain vmax. Use the same powder charge. I have used it in my 6ppcs for years.

The Sierra Blitz king 55 and 70g are the most explosive, they use a match grade bullet jacket, thus they cost a tad more.

I shot a lot of p. dog with my Retired BR rifles years ago, 60g sierra hp, 60g Berger and Watson bullets. My target knobs had type writer correction tape on them with the yardage marked on the dial. I shot the range with a range finder, dialed up, made a WAG on the wind, stuff died quickly out to 350 yds. In the calm, 400 was dooable on p. dogs.

We always put out a simple wind flag of 1/2" red yarn on a 42" sharpened, 1/4" steel rod. Not having the wind indicator was like shooting in the dark, Stevie Wonder.

like most varmint shooters i have tried a lot of different bullets its what can get right now . most
any of the bullets were mentioned will work. 6mm 55gr. to 87gr are great out to 450 wind gets
lighter ones first . 85gr. Sierra work but they work on deer too .little hard for my taste for varmints
go have fun shooting what ever you have .and let the experts argue what bullet is best. old man Rich

I really like the Speer 50g TNT's and the Hornady 50 spsx, in my .222rem. I would imagine the same (70g) in 6mm would be a good choice, if you can find them that is. Good shooting.
I use the Sierra 80g Blitz in my 1:12 6mm-250, very accurate, haven't kilt anything with them yet.

I shoot 243 14 twist with h4350 and 69 berger high bc varmit. I have shot apudad out to 700 yrds. And Spanish goats at 1050 yrds. All depends on shot placement

I would shoot Sierra 55 gr Blitzking. I will have good results with them.
Me too! If I could buy any, lol.

Any lighter weight plastic tip bullet jobber (55, 58 or 65 grain) that shoots well should serve well out to 400 yards. The higher BC of these will outperform hollow point offerings. The 6PPC with 55s or 58s is only 100 fps behind the mighty 6BR.

My custom 6mm PPC built on a sporter platform. The builder gave me 62-1/2 gr Watsons which I found incredibly accurate. Too bad Watson went away~!

its funny how varmint sometimers think they have a benchrest gun to shoot Prairie dogs you are going
to miss get over it in Wyoming the wind blows. I have shot tens of thousand of Squirrells and p dogs
don't get wrong I get my guns shooting great but. if I take fast stepping 22-250 or 243 the led is going
be shot out. a 223 with 55gr what ever kills good if the wind isn't to bad out passed 400yds. anything
6mm 70gr or so works find . if you to go farther you need high B C bullets. wind kill short light bullets
fast. some my buddies take a 17hmr and hornet 223 and have fun! I don't. I like guns ! bottom line.
Go and see what works for you. OLD man rich

The 6ppc is a fantastic varmint rifle. It’s better than many of the accepted cartridges like the 223. I’ve used it extensively in Wyoming and UT with 55gr Noslers. Have a go with it. It’ll do 400 yards without difficulty .

1-14 using Sierra 70gr or Nosler BT,s & V V N135 is a great combo & the bullet performance is better than using 68 grr match bullets.
