1:14 22-250

Went with my dad to have a Stolle Kodiak measured for a 6br barrel. He has a 222 barrel that had to have the necks turned to chamber from a panda. Don’t know the make, but it did do really well, as expected from a 222. Wanted a no neck turn 223 instead.

The smith is going to rechamber the 222 to 22-250 and have it fit the Kodiak since it’s .473 bolt face. They are cutting the old tenon off to help consume the old 222 chamber, barrel will be shorter of course, maybe 21”ish when done.

What bullets would you guys recommend trying with 1:14 twist, the smallest we have is 52gr Berger targets and Barnes 52gr match burners. Both do great in the 223 panda, but it’s 1:12. 100-200yd at paper.

Fish -

Howdy !

A 1-14 twist and the .22-250, are like cornflakes & milk.

I DK your intended application for the rifle, but 55gr bullets should work just fine.
Hornady's 55 SX is the " bomb " on groundhog ", matched with the .22-250 chambering.

IME:
You can go up to 60gr bullet weight, as-long-as bullet length does not exceed .750"

With your 14" twist, Hornady 52-grain ELD-M (NOT 53-grain VMAX - don't try in a 14" twist) and a decent dose of CFE223 are your friends. I have the benefit of an extra 5 inches over your proposed barrel length so the speed won't be the same, but that combo gives me tiny little groups at a bit over 3,800 fps. My particular rifle can shoot 55-grainers, but they are obviously on the edge of the weight limit for accuracy in my rifle.

One of my older Savage BVSS 22-250's has a 1:14 barrel. I have shot PD's out a measured 400 plus yard with it using the 40g Vmax bullet and Varget.

Been a while since I loaded and shot for one but mine was a Remington 700, varmint, 14" twist.

I obtain the best accuracy with the 50 grain Nosler BT's. Another bullet that shot well was the 55 grain Sierra BTHP which according to Sierra, was designed for the 22 250 and 220 Swift.

Find the tiniest group on paper, then knock the caps off of water bottles and send golf balls flying. Water bottle caps and golf balls ain’t asking much, but it’s a lot more fun than punching paper to us. But .250” or smaller five shot group would be wonderful.

The panda, we can call which direction the ball with fly, I’d like to do the same with the 250 barrel on the kodiak. The 6br barrel being made for the kodiak will do it no issue, nothing of interest there.

I‘ll grab a box of eld-m to try, looks like an interesting candidate. What about Barts bullets? Anyone tried them? Either original or ultras.

Those Berger 52's you already have should shoot extremely well in a 14tw 22-250 with a variety of powders like 4895, H380, CFE223 just to name a few. Those flat base Berger 52's may not be the sleekest highest BC bullet at the dance but they always seem to shoot very in 14tw 22-250's.

I've always had really good luck getting the 52gr A-Max, which is now called the 52 ELD-M, to shoot real well in 14tw 22-250's but if you already have a pile of Berger 52's I don't think you'll need to look much further.

Never killed any golf balls but many hundreds of ground hogs have fallen to my 14 twist rifles. (22-250, the Swift, 222) Almost always shot the 55 grain bullets with enough accuracy up to 400-500 yards. 55 grain Sierras, 55 grain ballistic tips, Vmax, etc. I always thought the 55 held up a little better and gave more pop out past a couple hundred yards. YMMV

Never even really tried to dial in a load for it, but my R700 22-250 shoots the 55gr hornady varmint express very well. Shot it out to 500 at least

We’ll try 55’s, have Berger targets and varmints both. 55’s is about where our cast of characters in the powder department run out for a 250, which is fine in 14 twist. Just have to wait till he’s done and see how it goes.

I have always said, the faster you get them out of the barrel, the better they shot. My first 22-250 was a Remington 788 and 1 - 14 twist and shot 55 gr. Then I purchased a Remington 700 BDL 22-250 1 -14 twist and shot 40 gr at over 4000 fps and 5 shots were a ragged hole. I just purchased a 22-250 Remington barrel action last week and shooting Hornady Vmax 40gr and it shoots really good.

Always had great groups from the old Sierra 55 grain SP bullet. Not modern, but shoots great in a 14 twist. I went to a 55 vmax for better BC, but lost a little accuracy. Best part is the SP is cheap too. Groundhogs do not approve.

That was our bullet of choice for a lot of years and many hogs. It is still top notch and tough to beat for varmint hunting. I too switched to the plastic tipped but wouldn't feel handicapped to go back to that flat base soft point.
