1-10 twist 30BR?

Is a 10 inch twist 30BR viable? I have a short (24in) SS 30cal barrel laying around and wonder if it`s worth the effort to try it in 30BR with 125gr bullets (moly). I tried someone else`s Sunday at 100yds, and it was somewhat of an eye-opener.

(And yes, I have poured over the 30BR category here)

Regards,

Scott

STP, There was a guy shooting a 17 twist 308 with 125gr bullets that shot good. but it just wast as good as the 30br....just go with the 30 br 17 twist , you will be much happier

From what I've seen while looking for a barrel to build a 30 BR, the 10 twist seems to be the "off the shelf" twist that was available. Anything different was $pecial ordered and co$t$ extra.
I think it was Pac Nor (?) that wanted an extra $125.00 (one time charge) to build a button to cut a 16/17 twist? And the special made tool would be scrapped after the barrel was cut?Wouldn't be too bad if you were ordering maybe 5 barrels at a time. ::)
It's been a while since I started looking so maybe the barrel makers have change a bit now that the 30 BR in different twists are becomming more popular?
Ask around about prices with the different makers and see what you can come up with. Be interesting to see if they've made any pricing changes, Mike.

[/ quote]. You could always call krieger barrels or Bruno's shooters supply , I paid $299 for a 30"HV 17 twist a few months ago .

$300.00 ($299.00) is right in line for a 30 BR barrel in the twist you're looking for. The costs must have changed since I last looked. 8)

The highlighted portion of the above quote is incorrect - and has been since 1997/8, when Chris Dichter (SP?), PacNor HONCHO, agreed to make 18" twist barrels for some pals and me - the rest, as they say, is HISTORY. ;) For a decade, nearly every TOP barrel maker has offered either 17", or, 18" - or, both - twisted thirty caliber barrels, as standard priced offerings . . .

Now, to the point of the thread - as Dave B. pointed out, depending upon application, the 1:10" twist may perform up to expectations - especially for a hunting rig: for a competition BR rig, "some money would be, left on the table." :-\ RG

I can't remember exactily who it was at the time but one of the barrel makers wanted the "extra" fee to cut the 16/17 twist for the 30 caliber. I was thinking Pac Nor but I guess not?
And it now seems that it has changed and that twist is more available. Good news for anybody wanting a 30 BR barrel. ;)
And as far as DocED's reply, I stand corrected and am not afraid to admit my mistakes, Mike. ;)

I really appreciate the responses.

My venue is strictly for local level F-Class, albeit "only" at 240yds maximum. We have bi-monthly matches, and I travel to another match at Springwater where they have but 185yds to enjoy.

The barrel I referred to is one of two that were gifted to me and a friend back when we enjoyed the Bodines Full Bore Prone League at Williamsport.

For the life of me, I could not think what to do with such a short 10 twist barrel since I recently have migrated to the 6mm`s for our local club matches. My shooting friend first suggested the 30BR but I dismissed it when it was first suggested a couple of years ago. Since then, my friends barrel was chambered and tested by another friend that had the time to chamber and thread it for a SA Savage and test it with his own action using Speer 125gr TNT`s with 31.0grs of H4198 seated to touch the lands. His test target at 100yds showed promise. So I tried 5 fireform rounds from the bench at 100yds and it seemed to me at least to be worth the effort to have my barrel done the same. I don`t plan on bench shooting with it, but trying it prone for our club matches.

Scott
