'03 Springfield project

Good day, :)

This is my first time on this site, so hope I don't bore you all with the same questions asked before!
I've a varmint rifle built in the '50s, stocked by Clayton Nelson when he was gailng fame, chambered for the 22-250 Varminter (goodness know what reamer!). My goal is to completely restore the gun, and thus this question. :P
Have any of you folks had a version of a 22-6MM rifle? Is so, whose barrel did you go with? And finally, would any of you possibly own a reamer that you bought that just cut your one barrel?
Any comments/suggestions would be appreciated. My quest is to maintain its' "classic" appearance with an "era" cartridge. Thus I'll use a chrome-molly tube, and hope I find a load before I burn up the throat!! :o

God Bless

Just my 2 cents worth. I'd leave it as a 22-250. Especially not knowing the SN of the '03 action that you have. Shilen and several others make darned good CM barrels.

Call me chicken if ya want, but a 22-06 is a precarious cartridge IMHO. WD

Is you serial number higher than 800,000 for a springfield .I would rebarrel with a modern good quality barrel and have the smith check the action. Some of the early actions were heat treated once and they beacame brittle. The later ones are double heat treated and are beasts.I have 4 of them and they are all shooters.By the way, what is wrong with a 30-06 chambered for this action. ?

Hi Wyle, ;D

Thanks for the thoughts. It is in the one-million serial numbers, so ostensibly not brittle.
You're right -- that ole' Douglas 22-250 Varminter tube gave a lot of dogs a bad hair day! But I got this itch for something different ::); may go to the .22 Middlestead since good .243 brass is out there.
Hope you have a great summer slamin' those varmints!

Hi Jon,

I failed to mention ::) that it is over the one-million serial number, so ostensibly should not be brittle.
Perhaps I also failed to say this is a Varmint rifle, and the '06 is a might heavy for dogs and gophers!! ;D
Have a great summer slammin' those varmints!!

God Bless

Speaking of 03 Springfields, don't want to hijack your thread, but this was sent to me the other day and blew me away!
