  1. Any Crow hunters here?

As the other poster stated, "smart birds". I started with a Kimber Custom Classic .22 LR with a Leupold 4X rimfire scope, upgraded to Cooper JSR in .17 HMR and .22 WMR's, then to a Ruger #1 custom in .17 Ackley Hornet with a Leupold 4.5 to 14 AO scope. I like the extended range that the .17 AH...
  2. Cut or not?

My response would be tempered by the material the suppressor is made of. For a longer barrel, I would keep the 25" length if it was a titanium can ( lighter weight, less flex on the barrel ). If the can is stainless and heavier, I'd think the barrel harmonics would be less affected if the barrel...
  3. Remington 40x or Savage 12 f class?

Have both. You'll have better luck out of the box with the Savage.
  4. dakota predator rifles

I've got 2 - a .20 VarTarg and a .22 BR. Both are very accurate and well built. I'd buy another if I needed one.
  5. FYI Foam ear plugs verses custom ear molds

This has been a very enlightening thread. I use foam plugs along with muffs, and was seriously considering custom plugs ( because I thought they would give me more protection ). I now see that is not always the case. Thanks everyone for their thoughts and input.
  6. Dakota Predator - using Douglas bbls

I've got 2 ( .20 VarTarg & .22 BR ) and they both shoot very, very well. It was my understanding that the barrels were Wilson's, just like Coopers. Mine are very smooth, minimally copper foul, and accurate. The triggers ( Timney, I'm told ) can use some adjusting or replacement ( I'm told a...
  7. custom .223 br/varmint rifles?

McMillan A5 solid fill w/ extra lead in the buttstock / Stiller Predator SS / PacNor 11 twist NBRSA contour - .204 barrel / Jewell trigger set at 11 oz. / Vais brake / currently has a Nightforce 5.5 - 20 X 50 NSX with an NP- R2 reticle. Not a .223 for you, but close. Built by Kampfeld...
  8. Ballpark price on a Shilen DGA action?

"The repeater DGAs with the custom woodstocks are normally below $2000. I have seen several receivers for $600. Butch" My sentiments mirror Butch's. I feel $2300 is way too much ( without seeing the rifle ). They were nice rifles, but you can go to The Shooters Corner web site and see modern...
  9. 3 Groove Barrels

Same as the ForumBoss, I use Pac Nor 3 grooves and have been very pleased. Long barrel life, easy to clean, and best of all, all of the barrels seem to be "fast". Good velocities out of regular loads. Also, very good accuracy. I'm a convinced convert.
  10. Broken Jewell Trigger

I love their triggers, but their customer service SUCKS! I had one break on a .204 varmint rifle in Montana on shot # 14. A piece just stress fractured. Gun put together by Kampfeld's. You could see the fracture plainly. The load was not hot by any means. Sent it back to Jewell and got the "...
  11. has anybody used midsouths bullets

Have used both the .20's and .22's in various rifles, and I was able to find an accurate varmint load for them. To me, they are like the old Hornady SX bullets - cheap, accurate, and very explosive. Priced right, too. I think you'll like them.
  12. longest varmint shot

852 yards. Standard 40X in .22-250. 55 grain Vmax. Also, like Ollie, took 2 shots.
  13. Mcmillan MBR stock question

Try Shehanes ( http://www.scopeusout.com/ ) , they usually have some in stock.
  14. Dakota predator mounts

You might try Robert W. Hart & Son. They make ring sets to fit custom actions, 1.350' in diameter should fit, I believe ). You'll need to check to see if the Predator uses 6x48 mounting screws or 8X40, they sell both sets ). They also make the rings in 1' or 30mm. Hope this helps.
  15. Tac.20 vs. 20ppc????

I've got both - a .20 PPC on a newer Nesika RBLP action, and a TAC 20 on an older Nesika RBRP. The PPC was put together by Kevin Weaver and it shoots great. The TAC 20 was chambered by Richard Franklin, and it also shoots great. Both are Pac Nor 11 twist barrels. Both shoot 39's, Sierra's )...
  16. Did Ruger ever use Douglas barrels

Yes, it is well documented that they used Douglas barrels, see the Clayton Ruger # 1 book ) on the early # 1's and the first production M77 .220 Swifts, with the dog leg bolt handles ), see Carmichael's book ). After that, production rifles used Wilson barrels that were hit or miss on quality...
  17. Local gunsmith...Opinions wanted.

Bob Green in PA is a name you need to remember. His work is excellent, his turn around quick, and he will answer questions and emails. He's done several for me and my friends, and to say all have been extremely pleased is an understatement. Last gun, I sent him my parts, action, recoil...
  18. How good are mid 90's Winchester varmint rifles?

I've got one in .223. I was told by a person at the Winchester factory that some of the first ones used Schneider barrels. I don't know if mine is one of those or not, but it has one the smoothest bore finishes of any of my barrels, including customs, both by feel of the cleaning rods through it...
