FEDERAL GOLD MEDAL MATCH ?

Why did Federal quit making this ammo , they were making the best ammo you could get , in my opinion . Did they lose the recipe ? OR was it a bean-counter thing ? 22rf , 900 series

With the prices of good match ammo imported from other country's between $20 & $30 a box , I would think Federal could make there Olympic 22rf ammo again and make a good profit .

He’s talking about the.22lr ammo, UM1 and 900.
:eek:LOL. . . thanks. I didn't notice where this thread was coming from.

I don't think Federal ever made the UM1??? What I had used and still have some left was made in Germany, apparently rebranded RWS cartridges. They really shoot well! Seems what I have was purchased at the end of their relationship with RWS???

I still have some that I use sparingly ;)

I had a lot of it 20 + years ago Shot 4P indoor Annie 1413 never like the stuff?
Gave it to the State Junior Program.
SK Std . Shoots well this days and TAC 22 out doors 50 and 100 yards.

The UM1 line was terminated due to the sale of Federal to Blount circa 1997 and Bount's bean counters cutting less profitable lines. At the time, Federal was actually increasing their market share in the US, however they limited themselves by not wanting to export this product.

The tooling was never an issue. When they killed the product, they removed the loading machines and put them outside under a tarp. The machines/toolin was later sold for scrap metal.

my HB savage liked the white box FGMM, 168. I have a few boxes of them. I did shoot some lighter 308 GM match, 150 something, minute of palm of your hand at 100 yards!! the 168gr was easy .3 and less moa. I think my best was .19 and quite a bit .25 groups. Gee, back then I think my buddy and I fired 5 shot groups!

Infrequent reader of forum titles as well? You are in the rimfire section, not a centerfire section. Don't feel bad though, look at post #2........same issue! ;)

That was the Match (900). They also made Ultramatch (UM1) that came in plastic slide-out boxes

As far as why they stopped making it? Everything I've read is that the tooling wore out and they decided to not replace it
Not true, tooling subject to wear gets rebuilt just like ELEY, after all the bitching about domestic match ammo, they invested big, never sold enough, took a bath, never to return, and sold off all the equipment.
Had a few conversations with Federal engineer during and post mortem.
