New hunting rifle build

I am a fan of both the 257 Roberts and the 260. To realize the true potential of the 257 Roberts it needs to be in a long action in my opinion and throated correctly for the bullet you intend to use. The 260 really shines on deer sized game with the 120 - 130 grain bullet. I prefer the Sierra 130 gr HPBT. It'll shoot flatter than you think and do a great job once it gets there. 260 is a lot more versatile than the 243. The only drawback is you don't get the free hair bun like with a 6.5 Creed.
Sounds like the 260 is the way to go for deer and coyote. I use a 150 grain in my 308 and it preformed great on this last deer .. i shot him in the base of the neck at a 100 yd and it didn't even exit. He dropped like a sack of brick! Lot of damage !

A really good option would be the 7mm-08.

In my humble opinion, it's one of the most overlooked hunting rounds out there.
For many years, I wondered about that. It's basically a 308 neck down to a 7 mm bullet. How is the ballistics compared to a two sixty remington

Well honestly I might put 50 rounds though it a year from coyote hunts , deer and target just to make sure its holding zero . No rapid fire for sure , whats the point? My main concern is the first cold bore shot anyways . Thats what counts in hunting !
For that type of shooting, barrel life shouldn't be much concern. A 6 creed or 243 should go 1200 or so with top competition level accuracy and many more for minute of deer.

Now a 22 creedmoor it might be a concern. That is more like 800 rounds. Its not just replacing a barrel, its also keeping up with rapidly changing throat errosion.

All of this really is splitting hairs. Everything listed here, even your 223 with a Barnes, will smoke the little white tails and hogs out to 150 or 200 yards. Anything with lapua, alpha, or ADG brass available is likely to shoot great.

Then it will last you a lifetime for sure.

The 260 Rem a few guys mentioned and the 6.5 CM are pretty much ballistic twins.

The 6GT is slightly smaller than a 243. Performance except with heavy bullets is similar.

At 50 rounds a year barrel life isn’t a concern with any of them.

Don't know what kind of shot distance you are expecting to be taking. A lot of the proposed cartridges have the ability to reach out to 5-600 yards easy enough with fast twist barrels and heavy bullets. The last two rifles I bought are a 223 and a 243 with 20 inch 8 twist threaded barrels. Too be honest, either will do the job on a deer sized animal with the right bullet. I would have gotten a 6 Creedmoor if Tikka would have made one instead of the 243, but I'm guessing that the 243 will do the job almost as well. Depending on whether you expect someone else to shoot the gun at all, say for instance younger kids, might impact cartridge selection. A 223 with the right bullet and a can is almost a no-brainer for a kid to take a deer with using an appropriate gun rest.

If you want something more exotic, the sky is the limit and lots of good choices already proposed. Barrels are replaceable if you shoot one out or want a different cartridge. Just my opinion.

Really liking the , 243 and 6mm creedmoor. When you say accuracy decreases at what level of accuracy are you talking about ? For a hunting rifle long as it holds 1in or less at 100 yards its great . We only have 2 places we shoot out to 150 yards . So if it will be 1 to 1.5in group at 150 im happy ..
Another thing is I want to shoot 100gr bullets . So how would varget and n140 work in the 243 or 6mm creedmore ? I have a ton of both

Keep it simple
The standard 243 will do everything that you say that you’re looking for with plenty of barrel life.
Great brass available and a ton of available components. Why make it complicated
Kinda what I'm thinking. How does bargain perform in 95 and 100 grain bullet loads ?

Also, when you say plenty of barrel life around two thousand rounds? Maby more seen as how id be ok with 1in groups at 100 yards

Your bar is low. .5 moa or better is what I am talking about. My 6 creed will do a 20 shot group into .6" at 100 with factory hornady match ammo. My handloads are about the same. Thats from a bipod and caldwell stable table. Im at 667 rounds and no change yet.

Think about it, 1200 rds of .5 moa barrel life is 24 years for you. You will be too old to shoot, dead, or ready for a new barrel by the time its 1.5 moa.

IMHO all these older cartridges can shoot great if you have the right chamber and twist etc. However, newer designs like the creedmoor have tighter chamber dimensions etc and are more likely to shoot awesome with a saami chamber. My 6 creed started as a .243.
