My Wood Rail Gun Project

The range in Wisconsin I've been going to since around 1978 used to have some serious benchrest competitors there. There was a guy some years ago who on a whim put a barreled action into a 2x4. An actual 2x4 you could buy at the local Home Depot. It shot bug holes.

It was a full blown 2x4 and nothing fancy was done with the inletting as I recall. Just hogged out for the action and barrel with a hole drilled through for the trigger bow. Post pics if you try it! There wasn't even paint or stain on the wood either. 6PPC IIRC......

I put a couple of coats of polyurethane finish on the barrel block, it did give it a nice deep blue color. I tried some wood stain on another piece, it will not stain like wood.
I plan on being at the range early Sunday Morning with this thing.

I spent the morning at the range, dialed in 29.1 grains of LT-32 behind my 68 grain Boat Tail.

This thing shot really well. After playing with the barrel block tension a little, I got serious with these five groups, all 5-shots.

I am really pleased how well it shot.

Here is a picture of the Rail Gun on the Bench and the five targets for record. I figure it’s about a .140 Agg at the most. Velocity averaged 3420 fps using my Garmin.

Randy, It tracked quite well. Everything worked just like it did with the aluminum top.

I did not have time to shoot any N133 today, the LT 32 has been shooting pretty good in my LV as well.

I got home from work, sanded it smooth, and swapped out the wood block for the DuraBlue.

I might try some urathane finish on it. But I think I will shoot it first. It does have a great looking grain structure.

The barrel seems really “dead”. I can tap it with a 3/8 steel rod and it just goes “thud”.

I really do not know. It was just an observation.
I know Charles Huckeba used to wrap golf club lead weights around his barrels to kill vibration, and he won a LOT of matches at every level.
