Weatherby 307 Builder action

I had to buy a reamer from PTG, so I ordered a couple of these actions to try. The price was certainly right. I got a 223 and 308. I have barrels and setups for both so testing will be easy.

I asked some questions about the action. These are made by PTG. The nice kid I spoke to said that they are gearing up for high volume on these to maintain the price point.

I will let you know what I think when I get them. And show some results.

Hard to comprehend that PTG is making them when there stamped Weatherby- Sheridan, WY?

The company is located in Wy. Also made in USA. No deception here.

Someone feel free to correct me, but I asked flat out if PTG was making them, and he said they were.
I wasn’t doubting your findings at all. I was just surprised they weren’t being built at Weatherby’s new headquarters at Sheridan, the way price points are made I guess.

Come to think of it I don't think weatherby's ever made any of their rifles in the past. They were always farmed out to somebody for production. Somebody might correct me on that. I think that weatherby is a marketing company and they have created products lines in the past that were produced by others.

I just got one of these blueprinted with a barrel. FWIW, it took 23 weeks.o_O (and they didn't get it right)

As I understand it, PTG does create the bolt for these, but the action is CNC'd at Weatherby, so these pretty much replace the Vanguard. They only have 2-lug bolts and are 100% Remington 700 compatible.

AFAIK, PTG creates the Stiller style bolt for them, and for their customers, blueprint the action/lugs/bolt, which is truing things up, if they pay for that. Very reasonable, but be patient! I'm hinged on action screws, and sold my house, so will be moving where I will mostly use it. Feels good, though. Mine is a short action. Mine is a short action, with a 20" barrel, was supposed to be threaded 5/8-24, but not. Has PTG 0 degree picatinny, Timney Impact Trigger, and a fairly thin barrel from Remington Custom Shop. And I have heard that PTG is somehow in bed with RCS.

EDIT: how's your shop? I just got mine dried in (30x40), and moving everything into it to store. I'm renting an in-law quarters about 1/2 miles from the shop, and will get shop setup with machines to move shell onto foundation. You were using yours a couple years ago, already...as I recall.

Well they make this one that looks almost just like it. I'm pretty sure they are making all the parts. I really don't think Weatherby is a manufacturer.

I've been using the new shop for more than a year. It's awesome. :)

They have been making that style for quite some time, in fact, I would have rather had the bomber gal, I think that's Dave's trademark, kinda sorta. Dave has always got the minions to get the work done, but I just think they have a lot of companies to juggle, such as PPG (Pacific Precision Grinding), the RCS, etc...

While I believe they do make most of their parts with CNC, and that goes for gunsmith tooling, I believe Weatherby does make the action, it's just a button away from completion.

I'm still not in mine, and was planning to keep my toolroom lathe in San Jose, but now everything needs to move to new shop, like everything we own. Lock, stock and barrel. :)

I will be testing my short action with 6.5 PRC and 300 WSM (26" fluted) in the same action. I have a 308 action I plan to build, but it's not a super high priority. Neither of those have a muzzle device. I want to thread them in case the suppressor (HPA) goes into effect. Not sure what you got from them, I think it would be much faster to buy the non-trued 307 action, but if they need to fit the bolt, I don't see how they can do that.

Last conspiracy theory...PTG makes the Stiller actions and Bolts.o_O

That could be really exciting having PTG making trigger parts that need to be held to the .0001's to function correctly. Heat treat also needs to be dead on. A big "no thanks ".
Paul

Well I'm pretty sure Jewell was using Chinese parts suppliers there at the end ( I was told by an informed source). I'm not sure those parts are rocket surgery level parts in those triggers.

Some of the best reamers I have are PTG. I think they cut better than any other reamer too. All of my headspace gauges are PTG. They hold a few ten thousandths.
