Being from nc, we don't have them anywhere close that I know of. Where can I go to shoot Prarie dogs? Ive google searched it a little but didn't find out much as far as a place to go but did learn that the ones that have them absolutely hate them and can't kill them fast enough so don't think it would make much sense to pay an outfitter.

You're about 15 to 20 yrs late in your observations . The free shooting days are pretty much history. The Varmint Hunter magazine ruin it.

Hunted them in Eastern Oregon when I lived there.
You gotta have a Hunting license in Oregon i believe in N.D also so wherever you got check the regs.
I'm not sure Oregon has P.D they have plenty of ground squirrels ( gophers).
I believe on private ground you dont have to have a hunting license not 100% sure on that Rick would know.

Honest enough question but no prairie dog shooter in their right mind is going to share a hard-earned hot spot. Just pay an outfitter.

The last several years, plague has also been a big hit.

Some areas bounced back, but just a little and not to the levels from before hand.

So several factors are making this much more difficult, in addition to the ones mentioned above.

Yep, there is still some public land shooting but getting someone to share a good shooting area is about like trying to get someone to share a favorite fishing hole.
If this is going to be a one-time adventure find a good outfitter and pay the price, otherwise you can spend most of your trip trying to find a shootable town and often even more time trying to get permission if its on private property.

I think that poison has become more effective also ? I've seen men on side by sides squirting anhydrous ammonia into hole and throwing a scoop or two of dirt over the hole ???

Yes, that too... to some degree.

Farmers/ranchers have been poisoning for a long time, but it is highly regulated in many places since it can affect other things. Chemical controls are expensive and so is deep discing/plowing to get rid of them.

Badgers and prairie dogs can give ranchers big headaches for sure, which is why I don't mind helping them out when asked.

We had a good spot, only a 1.5 hours into SD(east side) back in the early 90's. Ruger came in and paid the landowner for a weekend "sales" shoot. After that he wanted more money than my "corporation" could afford. It is getting harder to locate "new" towns and keep old ones accessible(ranchers retire, pass away) and haying during wet years requires poisoning.

No different than any other hunting these days. You mess around with the good old public, which is full of, well, the public and all that it brings or you pay some slimy outfitter.

I’ll shoot steel and paper until that’s ruined too.

Oh I've got a great spot for you! It's somewhere in Montana.....lol

It's tough to be the new guy in town. But ya gotta start somewhere I guess. For me it was a relationship cultivated and maintained over 30 years with my ex-wife's college freshman roommate.....who just so happened to be from Montana. No funny business just a friendship that has allowed me access to 9,000 acres of private land to shoot all the prairie dogs that I want......I can bring friends and family because I've earned the trust of her whole family. That's no small thing these days.

The best thing to do is just go and drive around public lands in prairie dog country. Ask around at the store or hotel and they might be able to help. Maybe even drive up to a ranch to ask......good luck finding a rancher that isn't busy in the summer time tough....lol
