6.5 creedmoore small pocket primer question?

Well I just ordered another batch of 6.5 Lapua brass, WITH LARGE RIFLE PRIMER pockets! Realized now after the fact, that I also have sizing dies (lee and small base redding) and probably would need small decapping pins! So, now not sure what to do with this batch of Lapua with small primer pockets ( with CCI 400 installed)! Arrggghh.

With the large primer pockets, I then would plan to use the CCI 200's which I use in .308s with no problem...so I guess those work here. (308 I have down pat now!)

Can anyone recommend something other than CCI 200 for the large primer pockets on the 6.5 creemoores?
OR confirm that the 200's are good for this case?

Again, would be using H4350 powder for these loads, and 6.5 Sierra 140Gr Matchkings.

Learning experience I guess...first time using 6.5 Creedmores.

Thanks for the inputs.
CCI 200 have worked just fine in all of my various LRP's cases. You should be just fine with the 200's.

As for the 400's, in SRP Lapua brass, I wouldn't give up on that as I've found they actually work better for me than the LRP cases. ;)

In some of my loads I have found the SRP will give better E S & S D #s than the LRP. Especially with the larger powder charges.

I will put them aside. Once I get this new caliber under control, maybe go back and fire the cases at the range, decap them, try with CCI 450's to experiment. As you mention, I do see that they supposedly help accuracy. I'm gonna need a little time to get there...boating season is approaching and a bunch of time goes there!

I load my 6.5CM SRP brass with CCI #41's there a tic hotter than the 450's, I have also used the Winchester SRP's, with 41gns of RL16 without any issues, I do find the SRP cases run about 40 or so FPS slower than a LRP case with the same powder charge using a WLRP.

So the large primers seems to offer a slight extra kick it would seem compared to small primer? So what is the point of the small rifle primer then? Why is that done?

Well, waiting for the new batch of Lapua brass with large pocket...arriving in 2 days.
I will use CCI 200's with them...what I have currently.

Probably wont get to try them for another 2weeks....weather not great in NY.

When I get around to it, give the other small pocket guys a try the CCI 41's as you mention.

Thanks for the info.

Regards

Have you used the 400's with H4350 powder in 6.5cr? What powder loads used...
The fear is that a burn thru will happen at firing pin with the thinner 400's cup. They are fine in .223...but half the powder is used there as in 6.5 creedmoore.

Am I too worried about this with a STD powder load (say 10% less than max load)?

Opinion?

Plan is for use in Browning X-bolt target max rifle @ 6.5, 26" barrel.
Thx

I've fired H4350 in Lapua brass with 400's up to 43.0 grs pushing Berger 140 Hybrids with no issue and the best load was at 40.8grs (oh, an the COAL was at 2.800"). IMHO, you're simply not going to have the issue you're "too worried about".

But. . . . always test to verify, as this is what all reloaders should do, though always with an approach for caution.

The only time I've had an issue with CCI400's was when I bought some .308 Alpha brass that has SRP's. I loaded up 10 rounds with CCI-400's and out of the 10 I had 3 pierced primers. There was no damage to the chamber or to the bolt face, but that was more than enough reason for me not use 400's in the Alpha brass, though they worked always worked fine in my Lapua's SRP brass. I continue to use 400's in other brass, but not in my Alpha brass where now I use CCI-450's as there's been no issue with them.

Laurie, great post!
I have some loads worked up in some Starline SRP brass with 43gns or 6.5 StaBall an CCI#41's, with 140 HP's and 147gn ELDM's for my 6.5CM AR10 with a 22'' 1&8, I have not tested these loads yet, so will see what happens?

It'll be very interesting indeed to see how a StaBall grade reacts to SRP ignition! I've tried its stablemate 'Match' in 223 Rem and 308 Win (large primer) and primer make/model change changed MVs significantly and to a certain extent group-size in both cartridges. Unlike some conventional ball powders, I wouldn't describe it as unusually primer-sensitive on this limited basis, but LRP to SRP in the Creedmoor is a significant change.
