What can cause this?

Trying to find a new bullet for my .20 TACTICAL. This has happened several times with a 40 grain V max. I’ll shoot 2-3 bullets through the same hole and one bullet will be 1/2”-3/4” off that hole. Is there something I’m missing or it can just be a list of things? I’m sure some of it can be the loose nut behind the wheel (the shooter) but I have a bunch of targets like this. Most of the time it’s the 40 grain V Max.

Not hardly a Savage. They can shoot some mighty fine groups very easy with the right combo.

As for question by poster. Could be your barrel twist (1/11 is best) and try the 39 gn SBK, which often shoots way better than the 40 gr, for whatever reason.

new bullet
Bedding? Gun is only a 1" average shooter?
Always give components a lot number & record info in book. When accuracy goes bad, check to see what componet was changed.

Had a bullet go from under an inch to 3" @ 100 yards. Checked bedding, scope, other thing. Turned out to be bad lot of bullets.

If other bullets/lots dont do it, its the bullet.

Tell us about the bench you're using. Not everybody gets to use concrete ones. Some benches are wiggly. They yaw when you put your chest - or gut - against them. Best to avoid touching them, or at least be consistent with gut pressure. I've done this to myself on dead calm days. Horizontal stringing, and it's me leaning on the bench.

Gun I do not think is the issue. I have another bullet 40 grain that will rarely throw one out a 1/2”- 3/4”. In my opinion I think it’s just bullet or bullets that are not compatible with my gun.
Things I think I do consistently.
1. Measure powder to the kernel.
2. Seating depth measure the exact same base to ogive
3. Shoulder bump

I’m not a professional reloader nor a professional shooter so I need to take this into consideration too. I thought I may have been one of a few that this happens to.

Always the last shot it's the shooter.

40 vmax do the same in five of my 20s. berger and sierra do not do that.

Never wish the last shoot into the group. Do what you did for the first 4. Tommy Mc

Had the same problem years back with a 25/06 Parker Hale. A change of primer cured the problem for me. Doesn't always work but sometimes it does. Worth a try. JME

Brass-
A full benchrest prep of the brass, with neck turning should be done. Then sort brass into groups of no more then a 3/10 gr spread.
Use Fl bushing die. Size 1/2 of the neck. . No expander with neck turmed brass. .002" neck tension.
