FWIW, both my Defiances had beta shrouds from him on them and I did notice a difference for sure. Then mid-year when I switched to a used Borden and I once again had a beta version on it and it's what I had when I won mid-range Nationals. I know people will assume I'm just biased because I'm friends with Erik but the shroud does help reduce weird stuff from happening in your ignition system. I have two new Bordens arriving this week and both of them now come with his improved shrouds (which by all accounts should be even better than the beta versions I was testing).Anybody have a guess if this will help a defiant deviant long action in 284? Just trying to squeeze all the performe I can get for 1000 F CLASS SHOOTING. THANKS. Captrayj
From my understanding yes it'll fit all factory 700 bolts but there's always a chance with custom actions it may not fit (because they're clones but not always exact clones) however Erik is always good about with customers if there's a problem.Do these fit any of the Rem 700 style actions?
Do these fit any of the Rem 700
it will help for sure. However I’m pretty sure it won’t fit a defiance because of a propriety cut in their bolt. I think there will be a run for defiance actions at some point in the future.Anybody have a guess if this will help a defiant deviant long action in 284? No. Many of the custom action makers have proprietary threads or diameters that don’t allow a stock 700 shroud to fit. Best to ask. I think he will have more offerings for specific models in the future.Do these fit any of the Rem 700 style actions?
Nah, I learned this from Speedy over a decade ago.which is where the idea came from I assume.
Some years ago, I bored and threaded a piece to 1/2 13 tpi, then screw a Remington shroud into it.Using a test indicator, the firing pin hole ran out about .005 with the threads.Nah, I learned this from Speedy over a decade ago.
Oversizing the shroud only fixes one issue, of which there are many with rem shrouds.
The root cause of the cross pin walking out is the hole size in the firing pin. Thats the real fix for the problem. I have never seen a cross pin walk out on a defiance enough to see it drag in the shroud. This is an isolated issue. The shroud modifications were in the book "The book of rifle accuracy" by Tony Boyer from 2010. In one of the Speedy videos, he seemed to suggest those were mods he did and Gene McMillan is who we learned from. In the book they drilled out the shroud with a 5/16" bit for about half the length of the firing pin guide length. I use a small carbide boring bar and leave about 0.2" in front and back and relieve everything in between. Eric's new one (Speedy design), they make a relief cut where the cross pin hole is in the cocking piece area of the shroud. The older Defiance Deviant was drilled like a 700 and that would work but at least the Tenacity has the cross pin hole at an angle. The shroud would still work but the relief cuts don't line up with the cross pin. The Tenacity shroud is also 1/2"-24 thread, so a standard 1/2"-13 won't work.
If you have the ability to modify them, I think Kelbly's sells a shroud for around $10, Defiance sells them for around $30.

Machining tolerances.Bolt shroud didn’t fit. Was very very tight (defiance deviant long action 284) retuned to Cortnia Precision.
The shrouds are meant for Remington 700 actions, not Defiance.Bolt shroud didn’t fit. Was very very tight (defiance deviant long action 284) retuned to Cortnia Precision.
No, the shrouds were never meant for Defiance or any other Remington clone action. That's why they are tight or too big because Remington 700's are larger than clones.Machining tolerances.
The manufacture for the Cortina Shroud attempts to keep the thread pitch diameter at the top side.so to keep the shroud from being too loose, and the rifle manufacture keeps the bolt thread on the low side for the same reason.
It happens…….BUT. ……Do keep in mind that these shrouds are made on a CNC Setup that that is very difficult to change for a special part. Eric will have to request to the manufacturer to make the change. Good luck.
I could fix it quite easily.
