Newb Question Priming Problems 6.5 CM

Hi all,

Longtime shooter, first time reloader. Like. The very first time.

I have once fired 6.5 Creedmoor brass that I have prepped, deprimed/resized. I started working on priming today, and I have run into a problem.

I have Federal SRM primers, GM205M. They do not seat in my brass. They will fall into place. Like they are too small. And not seat.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for the help.

Jason

Are you sure you don't have Large primer brass? Not all 6.5 CM is small.
No, I’m not sure. And that is probably the issue. I wondered why the brass seemed too large for the primers, but I didn’t know the brass might fit only large primers.

Good, but expensive, lesson learned.

Thank you for replying.

That's definitely the issue ... all my 6.5-CM brass (Peterson and Lapua) is LRP pockets.

More and more cartridges are coming out in both. Lots of rife stuff like 308 and 6.8 SPC are common and in handgun we see 10 MM and 45 ACP all the time Sorting our cases for progressive presses is pretty important now to keep the loading flow going.

If you can’t find any large rifle primers, you can use the link above to find some good new SRP brass to use with your small primers.
if you go this route, you might post what rifle that you have so guys on this Forum might know if it’s compatible with the SRP, without having to bush your bolt firing pin.

You might consider finding a local handloader willing to mentor you before you have an incident. I've taught several in my area and they enjoyed the experience and were very grateful for the help. Good luck
Thank you for the advice, Ken!

My dad was that guy, but I never reloaded while he was still alive. I used to spend time with him in his garage; though, I never loaded anything. Just sat and talked with him. I soaked up things from watching him and talking to him; the difference in primer pockets (relatively speaking regarding 6.5mm brass) somehow eluded me, though.

He's gone now. Lots of knowledge gone with him. I should've started actively reloading earlier in life.

The hand loads I tested today went well. My pizza-guy zombie ate some 3-round groups fairly well. The picture's from my 130 grain Nosler loads. My Hornady loads didn't group quite as well.

Hopefully I don't have an incident. If I do, I'll accept the lesson and hopefully keep my fingers. (Joke. Dark. But a joke.) :)

Sorry for your loss. Lost my dad in august. Blessed he was here 91 yrs. Stay safe

Ken is right you need to sit down with someone and load under supervision. I was given a long drawn out explanation from my friend that i bought a press from. The very first case I sized stuck in the die and it was years before I tried again. A friend from church sat next to me and showed me how and I learned what the problem was, You have to lube the brass when you size it. The first guy missed that part.

Hi, Ebb. Thank you for the advice.

So far, I think I'm okay. I'll have more questions when I start progressing a bit more towards finding the best seating depth based on my lands, and so on. At this point, I'm just using the data from my reloading manuals. (I do lube my cases. While I am definitely a new reloader, as prior to today I had never actually hand loaded through a full cycle from fired brass to ready-to-fire brass, and then shot it, I'm not quite that fresh and new.) :)

sounded like me, i "handload" virgin brass off and on from age 15-27 (now 31), thinking i knew what i was doing. oh man was i clueless, i decided to switch hobbies going back to reloading a few years back and went deep down the rabbit hole. it was incredible how little i knew.

best of luck learning the process sir, always happy to help share my input and help out!
