Farley Rest Help Request

Having a bit of trouble with my Farley rest and don't have the manual. I have tried to get the company to send me one over the last few months, but they don't seem to interested in helping a customer. (I should have bought an SEB. He responds). I have left messages on their voice mail and email. They even responded positively a few weeks ago on email, but nothing ever showed up in my email or mailbox. I am thinking they are either way too busy for customer service or perhaps are having financial problems.

Does anyone have such information that they can email or post?

Thanks!

I e-mailed Farley and got an over-night reply from Mike a while back. He sent the following instructions:

Roll Head unit all the way up on the vertical rack.(not off)

Take and loosen (not off) bottom slider plate screws.(2 small button head allen screws under head unit)

Remove large Jam nuts on spring plungers (leave spring plungers in)

Loosen spring plungers 2-3 turns

Slide joystick on and rotate assembly (will feel jerky and sloppy)

Remove handle and tighten spring plungers (fully engaged)

Fully tighten bottom slider plate screws.

Go back and loosen spring plungers 1-1.5 turns

Slide joystick on shaft (adjust tension to liking.)

Apparently the order of assembly/re-assembly is important! Following these instructions, I believe I've actually got it this time!!

Having done all that several times, I still have a minor issue that I hope will be solved by a complete tear-down and reassembly. Mike tole me in an e-mail this week that there's nothing special about this other than what I'm posting here. Give it a try.

Mike also said he'll send some pics and I will forward them to you as well.

Dennis

Thanks Denis. I will PM you my email. If you get a "manual" of some type it would be good to post it here for other forum members. I can't be the "only guy" having issues with communications.

If you don't replace the ball plungers, you will always have problems after a little use.

Thanks Butch. I will reach out to them again. Maybe the sixth time is a charm.

I can't imagine how difficult it will be to get this replacement part. I tried to order the lock rings last fall when they went missing, never heard back, so I purchased a fix at the hardware store.

Plus one for Butch's Tension Screws. Excellent modification to a Farley Rest. Plus Butch is great to deal with.

Butch,

Based on what I've written above, and using your adjusters, what change would be necessary to tune my Farley with your tension screws? I bought them from you at Shilen's swap meet and have installed them, but since removed them because the "dead zone" is still there. I don't want to over compress the spring washers and would really like to use yours instead of the OEMs. With the OEMs it is easy to tell when they have bottomed out; not so easy with yours since they seem more sensitive?

Dennis

What deadspot, I don't understand? You need to be sensitive, do not over tighten. I adjust them in until the slack is taken up. I vigorously work the stick and very lightly adjust each side. I recommend that you do your final adjustment at the range with your rifle on it. Have you checked our instructions on our website?
Do not over tighten!!

You weren't supposed to bottom out either my screws or the Farley's. You might want to find another person that has a Farley and let them give you a little OJT.

Butch,

Would Mike Farley, maker of the rest, qualify for that OJT? What I posted came directly from him. I never bottomed out your screws, but did "fully engage" the OEM ones, as directed by Farley. What I asked was how to compare your settings to Farley's, but I guess that's not in your wheelhouse.

So, thanks for your understanding and "response" - I'll probably have a set of Shadetree Tension Screws to give to good home after I get the rest cleaned and lubed again. I would rather have a helpful response from a manufacturer, or even NO response, than a belittling, insulting one like yours.

Take care. Goodbye.

Dennis

Gee, I didn't know that I belittled you or insulted you. Sorry if you took it that way. I'm always available by phone and email if you needed help. This is the first I've heard from you. I can't help you if I don't contact me.

Well, Butch, I did contact you - couple messages earlier. You chose to not respond constructively, i.e., explaining how to compare Farley's instructions with yours; instead, your comment was that I need OJT. If that's not belittling and/or insulting, then I guess I don't understand the meaning(s) of the words.

I appreciate your offer to OJT me at your location, offered via PM, but as I replied, I'll pass on that. Thanks anyway. I can just as easily go to Farley's for "straight from the horse's mouth" assistance.

Dennis

As I mentioned to you on the PM was my email and phone numbers are listed on my website. I also went through the way to clean and modernize your Farley and make it smooth.
Do a search on ball plungers and you will see what Farley is using. You have my tension screws and can look at them and see how they are made.
Oh, if you have my address and send mine back, a check will be in the mail to you.

Dear all, I bought a used Farley rest coaxial II two weeks ago.
I try to clean it inside on the moving parts and adjust the tension screws.
The only issue seems to be the Joystick arm that tends to rotate itself when I operate it. Is it normal in your opinion?
Is it possible that something inside has loosened or it is ok for the joystick to rotate on itself?
thank you in advance for your help
Remo

The operating shaft that the joystick is attached to is supposed to rotate. You'll even find that it's beneficial when running out of vertical travel...just rotate the joystick and you'll buy yourself some extra vertical travel, both up and down. You can find yourself in this situation as the front and rear bag settle in and your initial coarse vertical adjustment isn't on target any longer. It can prevent having to adjust the coarse vertical adjustment in the middle of a match when you're running out of time.

The annoying part will soon pass and I think you will find it useful. Are you competing or target practicing and testing your skills on your own? If you're competing, perhaps observe how your fellow competitors are doing with it...
