Alliant Powder Future Distribution Question

It was just announced that Alliant will be sold off to a Czech company by Vista along with their other ammunition brands. That's probably the source of the rumor.

Read again, manufactured in the U.S.
The LC plant in Missouri produces 1.6 billion a year by itself
Not according to this article.

As to LC, most of that ammo is for the military not civilian sales. Biden now wants to cancel all commercial contracts:

Like I said, be prepared.

Just for a minute guess how much powder a 155 mm howitzer uses to fire one round. I suspect the answer is in pounds for US people.

[unknown online source]:
What is the propellant charge for 155mm artillery?

155 mm M4A2 - Propelling Charge | MSM GROUP

The M4A2 (white bag) Propelling Charge is a separate loading charge used in 155mm howitzers for firing in Zones 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. The full M4A2 Propelling Charge consists of 13.4 lbs (6 kg), of M1 propellant and is divided between a base charge and four unequal increments loaded in white cloth bags.

And a description (long):

So were do you come up with 1.8 billion,
Seems the articles contradict themselves.
By your numbers if LC makes 1.6 billion then only 200 million is made by others in the U.S.

Winchester: USA (ball types)

There is a single propellant plant in the USA making canister powders for the handloading market - General Dynamics owned St. Marks Powder Company in Florida. Bar Ramshot, all of the above US ball-types come from that single large plant. It also supplies c.95% of the powder loaded in US military smallarms ammunition - a customer with about 50 times the priority of us handloaders.

So "Winchester" is St Marks Powder Company in Florida ?

Yes. St Marks Powder Co. makes all Winchester powders; all Hodgdon brand 'sphericals' and 'hybrids'; some Accurate brand ball-types; Alliant ball-types such as Power Pro. It also makes 95% of the propellants used in Lake City in 5.56, 7.62, 50BMG as well as lots of other military propellants and applications.)

Long ago, when Winchester was part of the Olin Corporation it developed ball powder manufacturing, which is a quicker, safer process than for conventional tubular/extruded types. Back then (the 1930s) Winchester was located at East Alton, Illinois but a new factory on the St. Marks River replaced it in 1970. Olin was broken up and the bits sold off and St. Marks ended up as part of General Dynamics in its Ordnance & Tactical Systems Division.

What differentiates Winchester powders from the others is that Olin trademarked 'Ball powder' back in the 1930s, and even today, only its successors can describe their products thus even when manufactured in St. Marks. That is why Hodgdon describes its Hodgdon-brand St. Marks Powders as 'Spherical' grades; also more recently 'Hybrid', Superformance, Leverevolution, StabALL etc, all Hodgdon trademarked products.

Winchester is now part of Hodgdon Powder Co. alongside IMR, and the former Western Powder group (Accurate and Ramshot grades) as well as its own Hodgdon products family of course.

The only 'ball type' powders on sale in the US not made in St. Marks are AFAIK Ramshot (Eurenco PB Clermont in Belgium) and Shooters World (Explosia a.s. in the Czech Republic).

Ive seen a bunch of Alliant RL16 and ARComp show up at some online retailers in the past 2 days...

Just be really careful shopping the internet. During the pandemic, there was one site that always “had” H-1000 in large jugs. As far as I could discern, the company consisted of one guy and his cell phone, not supported by credit card payment, but instead by modern no-recourse electronic transfers, and I’d be willing to bet, no powder, nor probably even a shipper’s label template.

Watch for familiar logos with spelling off by one letter. I think Lapua, Hodgdon and Powder Valley have imposter sites lurking on the internet. Even the major banks are susceptible. You may try to set up online access to your credit card only to find that a nuisance value charge got immediately made to your credit card.

At this moment Vihtavuori and Nammo Lapua are hiring people so much as possible.
Nammo Lapua and Vihtavuori have announced that they have enough work to do for next ten years. So all can guess where that capacity is going, for military. And for me, living in Finland, it is a good sign. It is good that our military is prepared against russia.

Thank you for update from Finland. Prayers for your country. I have a granddaughter there doing missionary work. She loves the country and Finnish people.

"HIGHER PRIORITES!!!!" Europeans not being able to conduct themselves like grownups has been the death of many innocents over the last couple of centuries. We kind of expected that this kind of thing would be a thing of the past. I am in total agreement that something needs to be done to help the Ukraine and Israel. Just astonished that after all this we have been drug into another conflict that Europe has allowed to get this out of control. Life without cheap and plentiful primers and powder I can live with. The national debt we will all have to pay due to another of many European rule-the-world hopefuls is just getting to be too much.
