30 BR powder

It's not a commonly used powder in the 30BR. But like several powders in that burn rate area (H322, Benchmark, etc), it might show very good accuracy if you're willing to give up a bit of velocity. Availability is always worth considering. -Al

Thx!
hard to find 4198
It's likely to be a couple years before we see any new H4198 imported to the country. Honestly, even if you do find a bit of it....what happens when you can't replace it? At this point in time, the safer bet is to go right to LT30 and N130 and let your gun tell you which it likes best. Then buy the quantity that you need. Both are available and work well in the 30BR with all the commonly used bullet weights/jacket lengths.

But you never know what a casual conversation with a local shooter might turn up, either. Like a couple days ago for me:

Good thing, too. I was starting to get nervous........ ;)

Great Al
That's all we need now, Powder Porn!!o_O
Heck I was feeling frisky with just 2-8 lb.
Guess I need to step up my game;)

I seem to find more Hodgdons CFE BLK on the shelf at the local Sportsman. Close to the same burn rate as H4198 and N130. Just haven't tried it in the 30BR yet.
Thx
interesting how such a long standing, popular powder, isn’t available
following your lead and ordering both LT30 and N130
appreciate the help

Would be interesting to try V-N120. The claim is for higher
pressures needed to burn properly and has the smallest
kernal of all the Vhitavouri rifle powders. And on the burn
rate chart, it sits next to H4198. Since everyone is working
the high end with long drop tubes, It may be worth the look.

N120 gets used extensively in the smaller case .30's for BR use...the 30 Major, 30PPC, 30 Grendel family. 4227 is a good one in the BR case if the driver knows when to get off the throttle. ;) But like H4198, it's not available in any sort of consistent manner.

There's burn rate to consider. But the big driver is expansion ratio.

Also, don't overlook the 'O.G.' 30BR powder.....Accurate 1680. Prior to the wide spread use of H4198, the 30BR made it's bones with 1680.

Good shootin' :) -Al

Al, have you tried anything like CFE-223 in the 30 BR?
I'd love to be able to use a ball powder in the 30.

I'll also give the 1680 a try since I have a couple of pounds of it.

No, I haven't yet.

A couple more to consider are Shooters World (Lovex) SOCOM and Blackout. I was charting some powders to day for testing after this seasons final NBRSA tournament at Webster City. In my measure set to drop 34.8 of H4198, the same setting gave me 39.3 of Blackout about 1/2 way up the neck. By the burn rate charts (not exactly The Law...more like a guideline), SOCOM and Blackout are right in the H4198/1680/N130 range.

The big thing is how powders react when expansion ratio is figured in. For those that wish to take the time and explore this further, you might want to start with the 222 Remington using a 22" barrel as a length. Once you have the 222's expansion ratio, start exploring many of the 'known good' accuracy cartridges...and some that aren't. Keeping the 22" barrel length as your 'default standard', you'll soon see trends emerge that give hints as to not only accuracy but also tuning characteristics.

Good shootin' -Al
