What happens to shot out barrels ?

So I'm just curious here. You guys doing FClass beach rest and the like. When you decide your barrels need to be replaced, what exactly do y'all usually do with the old ones? Toss em ? Resale possibly? I'm just curious is all

high power shooters, long range, palma, etc will give me their shot out bbls and I will try to set them back and put them on rifles that we loan out our junior shooters. Most are not going to pay a smith to set them back for their use, but I donate the work to the kids so it works out great. they will shoot good again, for a while, so when there is no cost to the kids, its worth it. to the normal shooter, maybe not.

If the barrel isn't already too short, many 'smiths will examine the barrel with a borescope. If the erosion and stress cracks are localized near the neck, which many times is the case, they will cut the old chamber off and rechamber/fit to another action. Many varmint shooters use last decade's benchrest rifle with last year's barrel. Even if they are totally shot out, you can always use nice steel for lathe projects.

I make muzzle brakes, bedding pillars, bolt handles and anything that I can get away with a hole in the middle of.

I do like the wind chime idea, lol

Many of the barrels that I have just fallen out of love with are given to friends. Since most have an 1.062 16 tpi, over the years, I have taken 6PPC barrels, ream them for 6BR, and have friends screw them onto Remingtons for Club Match Rifles, LiveVarmint Rifles, or just fun guns.

I rarely shoot a barrel until it is so bad that it can’t be set back.

A lot of my hunting rifles in years gone by wore old High Power Barrels or old Palma barrels. When you have a lot of barrel to work with and are willing to take 1 to 2 inches off each end they work fantastic for a hunting rifle.

I would have the gunsmith reprofile the barrel down nothing fancy normally a simple straight taper. Prices used to favor such behavior back in the day! Today the prices charged are so high it is not worth it in most instances. I have not done it in years who knows maybe I will have to try it again and see how it goes.

I have often wondered if a barrel would make a good choice for a sword as long as you where going to add a much harder steel for the cutting edge.
