Ned Buntline was a pulp magazine writer back the 1870's or 80's(?). He came up with the idea of putting a 12 inch barrel on the Colt SAA. It was just a gimmick. If you ever held one you would see how unwieldly they are.

I never held one, and I see how unwieldy they are. Nevertheless, one did appear in the film, as I pointed out to American Rifleman.

i have a colt buntline scout that my uncle got new as a kid. still have the black colt stamped leather holster it came with. yes a little unwieldy but it’s whatever your used to. it’s a blast to shoot and neat to have a gun that my family got off the train at the rail station brand new all those years ago.

Never had one but a friend did in the 70's. It had very poor balance especially with the narrow single action stocks. It wasn't a Colt; it was one of those single action replicas of foreign make.

His plan was to put a shoulder stock on it like Colonel Mortimore had that Clint Eastwood movie "For a Few Dollars More". However, he never followed through with it and it sat in his gun cabinet for ages until he sold it at a consider loss.
