Cholesterol -- Oatmeal-- Success!?

I quit putting my jeans in the drier, and it made about an inch of leeway.

What pisses me off is that I used to weigh in at between 190 and 200, and didn't have an ounce of fat. Now I weigh 190, and have twenty pounds of fat.:mad::rolleyes:
Same here. If you’ve experienced gut expansion, while losing inches on your thighs and glutes, have your doctor check your cortisol level. Excess cortisol can exhibit these outward signs , and can be a danger to your heart. Working on my levels.

Is cortisol the stuff that puts lead in your pencil??;) jd

FYI it's not cholesterol that's the problem. Cholesterol is actually extremely necessary in cell formation. It's the type of carrier - the type of lipoprotein - that's the problem. Non-HDL Cholesterol is, unfortunately, only a proxy for what really ought to (and can) be measured: ApoB. Dietary intake of cholesterol is largely irrelevant. The dietary intake of saturated fat is the big problem in increasing ApoB. Nothing wrong with statins for most people. Unfortunately PCSK9 inhibitors, which are much more effective, are costly and not covered by most health insurance policies.

So, about a month ago I went to the doc and blood work showed my cholesterol way too high; Total @ 265. LDL was186, HDL @ 62, VLDL @ 17. (don't know what VLDL is) Doctor wanted to slap me with a prescription for Statin drug, and send me home. I'm kinda reluctant to start popping pills, and wanted to see if I could do something with diet.

Anyway, I started having oatmeal for breakfast every day, (1/2 cup) and today we had a free health fair where I went and got another screening.

Short story is that my total number dropped from 265 to 166.
LDL dropped from 186 to 86
HDL went from 62 to 52
didn't mention VLDL on todays test.

Anyway, am I lookin at a WHOO HOO moment? Did just eating oatmeal do this?

my triglycerides were 139 which is high, but within the limits.
Blood Glucose was 96 which also is high, but not quite in prediabetes zone.

Now it's time to see if I can fix those two things. jd
Wow. Just had some blood work last month myself. I'm at around 255. Doc wants to put me on meds if I can't get it back under 200 in 3 months. I'll try your regiment. Never been on any meds and at only 60, I'd like to keep it that way as long as possible.

I didn’t want to be on meds either. But after 3 stents and triple bypass all before I was 55 my way didn’t work out so well. Now I’m on meds and quite healthy.

Holy smokes! And I'm very unhappy with my non-HDL C level of 140 !! (Age 58) I'd like to cut that figure in half. Luckily the CT Scan of my heart showed no plaque build-up - yet...

If I were you, I'd listen very carefully to your doc... I'm seeing a lipids specialist in three weeks.

I would if I thought I couldn't get this under control. I can easily get the number down under 200. I just let it get out of control since retiring. Injury to my shoulder ceased my workouts for 6 months hasn't help. I can control my weight fairly easy also. That's a bit up as well. The oatmeal thing was a shocker although I never asked if he was doing anything else to help those numbers. Oatmeal is a good cholesterol reducer. One month seems very fast for results of those proportions. Usually they give you 3 months for good solid results. Glad it worked out for him in his case tho.

Well I'd say your numbers are extremely high and an abundance of caution is required. There's nothing wrong with meds (only about 5-15% of people have an issue with statins and less with newer drugs) to help you get things under control (alongside dietary changes - cut out all saturated fats for starters). Stop them once they are. If you want to learn more about low density lipoproteins etc I'd suggest listening to some of Dr Peter Attia's podcasts on the subject (https://peterattiamd.com/). He also did an awesome podcast/discussion with Dr Andrew Huberman (podcast Huberman Lab) on the 4 horsemen of death (heart disease, cancer, mental illness, accidents) which is eye-opening. Death from heart disease is largely preventable if people dealt with it early enough - very early. My goal is to cut my non HDL C in half...

I'm going in tomorrow for a follow-up lipids panel because I forgot to fast prior to my physical in Nov and my numbers were up.

Cholesterol issues run in my family, my mom, now 88, has been on cholesterol meds since 1972 and all or most of my 7 younger siblings are already on statins and several other meds. I've resigned myself to being on meds, guess I can't complain too much, made it 66yrs without any.

Both my grandfathers died of heart attacks, my maternal grandfather when my mom was in HS and my paternal grandfather when I was 10. My dad had 2, first at 59, the second at 61 killed him. All 3 were heavy smokers - I never once tried it.

2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil a day helps. Just an FYI. Dr. Mercola has a great website with tons of study results on satan drugs. Long term use raises your risk of getting type 2 diabetes 2-3 fold. They raise your risk of dementia and alzheimer's. The average of extra life by taking them is less than a week. Using the drug companies own data they sy it redued heart attacks from 0 out of 100, which seems like bs to 1 non fatal heart attack in 100, but does not say what the total numbers were. It's estimated that Satans have grossed $1 TRILLION in sales. There are also some BP meds that make your platelets stick together. I had horrible reactions to Satans, and up until very recently, I have never known more people who have had bad side effects to a drug/ dna altering shot before.

Interesting study presented today at the American College of Cardiology annual meeting in New Orleans, and simultaneously published in Lancet. I read the article, and it was a collaborative analysis of 3 studies with over 30,000 patients, and basically tells us that for individuals with cardiovascular disease or high risk of CV disease, who are taking statins already, that a measurement of inflammation using high sensitivity CRP (C-reactive protein) is a better indicator of future risk of MACE (major adverse CV events like heart attacks and death, etc.) than their lipid numbers.
From the article:
"To date, three randomised trials have shown that targeted antiinflammatory therapy with canakinumab or colchicine can significantly lower cardiovascular event rates among patients receiving statins in the absence of any reduction in LDL."
So we may see drugs in addition to statins becoming more routine.
