Cholesterol -- Oatmeal-- Success!?

Food effects everyone differently yes some foods don't help my grandmother ate bacon almost every day of her life and lived just shy of 105 years old it's not the food it's your body that controls your cholesterol I had 4 blockages, and two stints so looks like I didn't get those genetics.

Get ready to gasp:

There is no correlation between serum cholesterol levels and cardio disease.

After you’ve recovered from that shock, read “The Great Cholesterol Myth” and “Reverse Heart Disease Now” by cardiologist Dr. Stephen Sinatra.

No.
With rare exception, the more small dense LDL particles a person has, the greater the risk of cardiovascular disease.

I had the cholesterol problem (high numbers of the bad one). Doctor immediately told me to go on a statin. I knew I had been eating cream cheese like crazy and tons of pork cracklins. So, I refused and started eating oatmeal almost every morning and using Metamucil. It came down to tolerable levels. I started eating badly (actually I enjoyed it) and it went back up. I read some articles on statins that said research showed that if you did not have a history of heart problems they will only add 6 months to your life at my age (above 60).

At any rate I go back to the Dr. (who I don't like and have no trust in) and he puts me on a high dose statin (atorvastatin calcium 40mg). I'm thinking OK, I'll play the game. The first week I take it I get up in the morning feeling like I picked 10 bushels of sweet corn. Then I start feeling dizzy like I might fall down. I quit and I am searching for another doctor.

But, I'm still eating oatmeal and drinking Metamucil. I read the Bible daily and go to church at every opportunity. He's going to take me one day and only He knows how.

A good Dr. with old time skills, is hard to find, if they even exist any more.

I can't argue with that, but I've always been suspicious of the concept. It's almost like the presumption that since all the shootings are done by guns, that guns are the cause of shootings.

It may be that the majority of folks who suffer cardiac disease and related death have high levels of LDL, but is there maybe other factors that cause those LDL levels as well as the cardiac conditions; maybe simply genetics?

And how many folks finally expire at ripe old ages of other causes, and have had rippin high LDLs all their lives.

I'm pretty happy that the oatmeal thing seems to have worked for me, and frankly I like the oatmeal the way I've been doing it. But I've still got doubts about the danger of cholesterol, and also about the safety of statins. jd

So, about a month ago I went to the doc and blood work showed my cholesterol way too high; Total @ 265. LDL was186, HDL @ 62, VLDL @ 17. (don't know what VLDL is) Doctor wanted to slap me with a prescription for Statin drug, and send me home. I'm kinda reluctant to start popping pills, and wanted to see if I could do something with diet.

Anyway, I started having oatmeal for breakfast every day, (1/2 cup) and today we had a free health fair where I went and got another screening.

Short story is that my total number dropped from 265 to 166.
LDL dropped from 186 to 86
HDL went from 62 to 52
didn't mention VLDL on todays test.

Anyway, am I lookin at a WHOO HOO moment? Did just eating oatmeal do this?

my triglycerides were 139 which is high, but within the limits.
Blood Glucose was 96 which also is high, but not quite in prediabetes zone.

Now it's time to see if I can fix those two things. jd

I’m in that exact boat!

Starting replacement of my trashy lunch and breakfast with oatmeal with fruit n nuts two weeks ago.
I allowed one day in the weekend for trashy food so I stay faithful.

Looking forward to seeing my results next visit.

1,200 IU of vitamin E and 2,000mg of vitamin C. A day Changed my grandpas 80% blockage to 20% in less than a year. His doctor did not believe it but dont think a scan could be that far off. Most doctors just push drugs instead

Supposedly worse than cane sugar is high fructose corn syrup and it's in everything that is tasty.
I read a book a while back on Fructose, well on a related subject. Anyway Fructose is IMMEDIATELY Stored in and around the liver. The body does not try to burn it, straight to fat around the liver...

I was supposed to take statins. I had the same experience. I started reading about cholesterol. Turns out your brain is made up mostly of fatty acids including cholesterol. So how can depriving your brain of the material it is made up of, a good thing?? I take Metamucil every day and stopped seeing the Dr that put me on the statins.

For me, diet has never had more than a small effect on my cholesterol levels. However, 10mg of Lipitor and all my numbers are in a perfect range.

The biggest error that is made is when we assume what works for some people works for all people.

I have had the same problem for 10 years now and I have had 3 different Doctors trying to get my blood sugar down my cholesterol down and blood pressure under control with all types of medication . I have recently started working out and taking Berberine a natural plant based capsule 3 times each day With some amazing things that are going on now. All 3 of my issues have had a very very good thing happening. All are way down and staying down . I am still waiting to see how well it is working for me on my next trip to the Dr office.

Atkins, of the low carb / high meat diet program, is a cardiologist and developed the diet for heart health. I did it 20 years ago, ate a lot of beef and cheese, and lost weight plus lowest cholesterol levels ever. Makes you wonder if any of these guys know what really goes on.

Just oatmeal? Or did you replace just your morning breakfast meal with oatmeal, and eat your other regular meals? Inquiring, possibly unhealthy minds want to know. ;)
I've been eating just a little bit less of everything. But yeah, the oatmeal breakfast with one fried egg has been about the only change.

I've been messing around with retiring for the last few months, and that means a lot less activity. I quick like put on a few pounds and didn't like the way my jeans were fitting, so I decided that I'm not gonna go heavier than 190 lbs. I'm six feet tall, and 190 didn't used to be fat for me. Now it seems like I've got about ten pounds of gut on me.

My next goal is to start getting something physical going on. I'm thinking if I could actually start losing a few pounds that my gut and my glucose might go down. I'm not interested in living forever, but I'd like to be and feel healthy as long as I'm alive.

I don't quite know just what the Lord has in store for me, but I'd probably do better at it if I had good health and energy. I'd like to thank Y'all for your experience and advice. jd

I did the keto diet and lost around 25lb in a couple months. I like meat... sugars not so much. I haven't had a soda in like 6 years and drink about 8-9 bottle waters a day(16oz). I have aways had high blood pressure since I was 16 and high heart rate. Been taking bystolic and tricor for years. Heart rate is down and blood pressure down. Before I started keto even when on meds my cholesterol was high. Started keto and cholesterol went down??? I don't understand it. Went off keto diet and gain all weight plus 10lb. Going back on keto diet. At least I felt better and lost weight. Wife don't agree with what I eat. I'll I know is I felt better, lost weight and ate what I liked, meat!

FIL is 83, just had a heart attack but minor, had 5 blockages which 2 where opened and goes back Wednesday for the other 3. His diet had been farm raised food ( garden and home grown meat). If I live that long eating same stuff I will be good.

God only knows hairs on our head..

Its what made this country obese. Figure out when they started putting it into everything and think how many overweight folks you knew before that. I can remember when every elementary school had one “larda$$”, now every kid is overweight

  • VLDL level: VLDL is very low-density lipoprotein. It’s another “bad” form that contributes to plaque buildup. VLDLs carry a type of fat (triglycerides) in your blood. If you have too many VLDLs, the extra fat can build up in your arteries.
  • Triglycerides: This is a type of fat. You need some triglyc
