Question About 8#’s of Powder

Simple, basic question for you guys. A very good friend of mine has found a LGS that has a 8# container of Benchmark for $350. It’s in a state that does not have sales tax, so it’s just $350, not tax, no shipping, no haz mat. I have been looking everywhere for some. It’s a reputable place that my friend has dealt with a few times. I have only ever bought single pound containers of powder before, never an eight pound one. If you take off the screw on lid of an eight pound container, should it have a white seal over the top, like the one pound containers? My friend has no idea what the powder should look like and I’m just thinking, what if it’s some other stuff in that container. If it has a seal on it, I’m pretty sure in getting the real deal, I think. What do you guys think?

Vit powders do not have a seal that sticks but it's built into the cap,....hod
gdon powders have a seal you pull off and I myself stick that seal in the cap, but it should have a seal that's lightly on the canister, yes it should have a light seal but sometimes they stick in the cap also, if this makes any sense

here is my 2 cents...I have never seen a NEW jug without a white seal on the jug mouth or in the cap.. Some even have the seal, and the cap is fixed in a way that alerts you to it being opened
If I do not know and personally trust the individual I am buying an opened jug from, then I walk away. You can usually tell if more than one powder is mixed by the color, kernel size and shape. You cannot tell if different lots of the same powder were mixed , or if it was stored incorrectly. In this strange world now, a single jug of powder that just shows up should raise a red flag if there is no believable explanation from the vendor.

Check the date code, I bought an 8# of Varget in June. The white under cap seal is stuck on well enough it doesn't come off with cap(I checked).

Hodgon powder "seal's" if you can call them that vary, some are properly affixed some
have come off by simply unscrewing the cap.

How is your friend supposed to see the powder? Take the seal off before he buys it?
What makes you suspect there is something else in the Jug?

Thanks so much, I totally forgot about this. My friend is on his way to the shop. I’ll have him send me a photo of the date code.

If it has a seal and it stays sealed, obviously, you can’t see the powder. And no, I don’t expect him to pull the seal off. If the seal is broken, then he can and he can take a photo of a few kernels and then I guess I can see them. I have only been using two powders for the last ten years, I know what it should look like. I mean, there could be another similarly shaped powder in there and I could not tell, but if it’s not the proper shape, I would immediately know it was wrong. I was a cop for 25 years, I suspect just about everything, until it is proven otherwise, just my nature and a couple of decades of people lying to me daily.

this seems a good place to say i always thought powder companies should put better seals on all size containers . i mark mine so i can keep them strait

It’s a lot to pay for powder but in these times, I’d grab it if I needed it. If it’s at a “store”, don’t worry about it. Flea market or gun show? I’d be more
So I bought the powder. It was sealed and had a fairly new date code on it. $350 is a lot of money, maybe that’s the going rate now for 8#’s of powder. I mean, it looks like the going rate for primers is going to be about $85 or so now.

It’s going to be that much for anything popular now.
