The world seems to be pushing me I certain directions

Just opened the last stash I found that I didn’t realize I still had and it seems to be pushing me in a certain direction…

1600+ cases of 5.56
2000+ rounds of 9mm
Good hand full of 30.06
Plus a little .308 and 54r

Case and point there’s not a single piece of 6.5 Carcano in the lot… feel like the universe is telling me a bit about my plans for reloading. I got a 9mm coming home soon. Contemplating selling the SKS to buy an AR15.

Only other thing I can think of is do I have enough brass to sell to get the Lee 50th anniversary reloading kit? I have no idea how much this pile of brass is worth

Depending on the type of hunting/shooting you plan to do, I would say enjoy the 9mm and buy a nice, middle priced 223 Rem, bolt action rifle rather than a AR-15.
But if you just want to fire a lot of rounds fast and not worry about too much accuracy, then have at it with the AR.

I enjoy different types of firearms for different reasons.

Having severe prejudice towards the AR platform , after two years in Nam , why would anyone give up a functioning SKS for a over-sized B.B. gun ? Carried the SK , after leaving several welded M-16's in a hole , where they probably still are for all I care . But my SK is in my Gun Cabinet .

If you have a 9mm pistol on the way, a 9mm AR may not be a bad idea, same ammo, lots of capacity and IMHO a better option for home defense, keep in mind that its coming pit of the rifle barrel a good bit faster than a pistol. Just something to think about.

I have an extra RCBS Special 2 press. I think I have an extra powder thrower and trickler. Let me dig around, today. I feel bad for your situation with the divorce and recovering from that. You can send me 1000 of that 223 brass on trade if you decide not to use it all.

The 233 Rem has become my favorite caliber in bolt rifles. Why?

Easy to load, cheap to reload, no recoil, capable of excellent accuracy, long barrel life, meets about 95% of my varmint and predator hunting needs. If you shoot a lot, this caliber is a very excellent choice.

I'd get a Tikka T3X - can't go wrong with this rifle. If you don't mind the extra weight, the T3X varmint model, at least mine, is a sub 1/2 moa rifle with tailored reloads.

No love for the king of them all, the AK? That is my go-to for reliability
SKS has a longer barrel , making it more accurate at a longer range , and carries higher velocity to range due to the longer barrel . SKS isn't subject to some of the minor issues the AK is . I've seen AK's jam when they get smokin hot . Don't really need the full auto , anyway . Just my personal preference , that's all .

When I started reloading I realized there was brass that was easy to find on the ground, free, if I was willing to pick it up out there people shoot and just leave their brass.

That initially started to help me decide which calibers to buy guns for... and my mail calibers have been
Pistol: 380 ACP, 9mm and 45 ACP.
And for rifle .223 / 5 .56, 30-06, 308, 243
From 5.56 LC brass I make 20 Practical and 20 Vartarg, for free, saves my money for powder, primers, etc.

I do have some calibers which I love, which I have not gotten brass for free, 17 Hornet. Plus all my rimfire 22 LR, 17 HMR &17 WSM, but those are worth it for shooting sage rats in volume!

I did build a 7.62x39 AR rifle, as I have found some brass on the ground, but mostly I saved brass cases from ammo from GECO. Compared to my other rifles, the 7.62x38 shoots the worst as far as accuracy, so it's more of a "fun gun" or defensive weapon, rather than a hunting rifle, and for sure not a target rifle.

Bottom line, I like a plentiful supply of free brass, plus I can easily find ammo on the market, pretty much anywhere, almost all the time, in lots of available configurations at reasonable prices!

If you don't have an AR15, you're not a second-amendment supporter in action. It is our nation's rifle. As a member of the unorganized militia, it is your Constitutional duty to be well-regulated. If you don't own one, how can you be proficient and well-trained with it?

Not sure the SKS is more accurate at longer range, more often SKSs are LESS accurate. Barrel length doesn't make a rifle more accurate either, it just means more velocity.

One thing to keep in mind is that most 9mm defensive ammo was designed for maximum effectiveness in a 4" pistol. Sometimes bullets don't perform as well if going faster than intended or slower than intended.

I agree that does need to be taken into consideration. For the 9mm carbine my soulution would be to simply run 147 grain hollowpoint factory loads for self defense and practice or plink with the same fmjs he loads for the 9mm pistol.

Last century, when I shot NRA HP in "service rifle" category, I used the M14/M1A. At the start of the 1990's a lot of us were just not going to pick up the AR-15 to participate in "service rifle". I went to bolt gun.

One of my main gripes back then attending the NRA National Championships at Camp Perry was that it was the only place in the country that just fired 3 matches of the 4-match NRA HP course-of-fire per day. Probably the greatest reason for that was safely managing the large number of competitors attending and having to contend with the number of alibis string refires in the rapid-fire matches at 200 and 300 yards, especially at 200 yards.

Of the military services, the Marines picked up the M-16/AR-15 first for competition.

I was squadded next to a Marine competitor on Rodrequez Range in the mid-90's and watched him exasperatedly refire his 200-yard rapid fire twice, after challenging score, while the rest of the competitors languished. On his third firing, his scoreboard was finally marked "X--10". The previous two firings were recorded "X--9, 0--1". This helped me overcome my doubts of the little black gun's potential for accuracy. There was no doubt in my mind that over the past 15-20 minutes he had put 30 rounds in a 3-inch circle via sustained fire (60 sec) with a front post sight. (Back then, the competitor assumed the 200-yard sitting position from a standing position when the targets came up at the end of the preparation period.)

Then point me at some one to buy my 1600ish cases of 5.56 so I can buy equipment to reload for my SKS. I would rather keep the SKS.

I used one in the Marines and I’ve owned one every year I’ve been out. Divorce took it from me. I’ll have one again. Chill or I’ll start pming you paully shore memes telling you to do so. The beatings will continue until morale improves!
